Does anyone give formula and BM?

Just wondered.... Some days I think I should just give up the BM. She does nurse all night, but mostly gets formula, and maybe 1 or 2 btls of BM per day.  I know the benefits are worth it, but I just feel like she's not getting enough BM to make it worth it.....

Re: Does anyone give formula and BM?

  • We do both b/c I went back to work and do not pump enough. I read somewhere that even small amounts of BM are still beneficial.

  • Even a tiny bit of breastfeeding is worth it.  Here's a link that you might find helpful:

    Good luck!

  • About a month ago my supply tanked since I wasn't able to pump enough at work.  I was supplementing almost all day while DD was with her nanny.  I stuck to BF and pumping as much as I could and we got back down to about 8oz of formula during the week and none on weekends.  I still don't have any frozen and barely keep up, but I feel like I succeeded in getting back on track.  Do what you can, but know that sometimes you can work to get supply back up and sometimes you can't.  Either way DC will benefit from whatever BM is available :)

  • I have had to supplement with formula since T was 3 weeks old because of low supply.

  • Our LO is BF all day (I work from home) but he gets a bottle of formula around dinner time.  This gives me a little down time and a chance for dad to feed him.
  • Yes.  LO gets at least one bottle of formula a day, as his last bottle before bed.  We've been doing this about 2 weeks now.

Yesterday, he had to have a bottle of formula at daycare, too, because his fourth bottle of breastmilk leaked all but 2 ounces (so frustrating to lose the liquid gold).

This morning, I had to give a bottle of formula before daycare b/c he was starving, yet I was empty (he had been latched on and dream feeding from about 3am to 6am, so there was nothing left).

Because I'm just days away from my 6 month goal (yippie!), I'm starting to wean, especially away from pumping at work.  But, I do hope to continue breastfeeding at night and maybe one bottle of mama milk a day for a while.  I'm of the opinion that even a little mama milk is better than none.  However, I am looking forward to be done stressing about making enough milk at the office to cover for the next day.

The important thing to remember is happy mama = happy baby and family.  So, if you're over supplying breastmilk, transition to formula and don't beat yourself up about it.  You've done good and you provide so much love for your LO in so many other ways.
