Holy Laboring! Question about epidurals

I am going into my third day of "early labor" as my book says.  I have had constant bloody show for two days (nothing bright) and I've got the big contractions that you can't walk through.  Of course they are anywhere between 10-20 minutes apart, so I'm stuck at home, waiting for them to get closer together. Just because they aren't 5 minutes apart doesn't mean that they aren't still opening me up. I'm worried that they will have done enough work that I will be too far along dilated to get an epidural...has this ever happened to anyone?

Re: Holy Laboring! Question about epidurals

  • Depends on your hospital, honestly.

A friend of mine got an epidural 20 minutes before she started pushing (right at 9cm).  Some hospitals/doctors won't allow you to get one once you're at a certain point.

  • IMO, if you are home that long and able to stand labor until you get to that point it will go quickly from there and you won't need the epi. good luck.
  • I was in early labor for several days and still had plenty of time to get my epi with DD. In fact, I was 'kept' at 1 cm since I was just DONE with being in early labor by that point.

  • At my childbirth class on Monday, we were told that there is no longer a 'window of opportunity' for getting an epi. Different hospitals may have different policies though.
