3rd Trimester

35 week appt - wanted to cry when I drove away

My doctor did an internal and a GBS today.   No progress, which is fine. But the reason I wanted to cry ...

We went to our childbirth class last weekend and one of the videos in particular really scared me.  It was a small framed woman who was trying to give birth to a larger baby.  She was in Stage 1 labor for a very long time, and then was pushing for over 2 hours, the vacuum extractor was used, and then they finally did an emergency c-section.  The reason this scared me is because my baby is looking big, and I am small framed (and only 5'0).  My doctor has told me we will wait and see if he will fit through the birth canal.

So I asked her today if over two hours of pushing was normal at this hospital before determining baby won't fit, and she told me no - 3 hours of pushing was the cut off at my hospital.

When she did the internal, she also felt around to see how wide my pelvis felt, and she determined it was actually very narrow.  Two weeks ago at my 33 week appt I had an ultrasound and baby's head was measuring as if it was at 37 weeks gestation.   So anyway, I am now more nervous than ever.

I don't care if the birth is vaginal or c-section - whatever is best.  I just don't want to go into a vaginal birth if there is a large disproportion and the likelihood of me needing a c-section is high.  It just seems pointless.

I was hoping to come away from the appt with my fears reduced, but now I am just even more unsettled.

  • I'm sure much smaller woman than you gave birth to much larger babies.  You probably won't know until you try pushing.  GL, and keep thinking positively that you can and will be able to do it.

  • At your next appointment have the OB check you again, give best case scenario for your situation and ask if it would be smart to go ahead and schedule the c-section. Express your concerns and fears. There is nothing wrong with that. Use your OB's information to come to a decision together.
  • Unfortunately, you'll never know if you can get the baby out unless you go through the process (I think).  The good news is that c-section is not the death sentence that people on this board make it out to be.  As long as you make a point to get up and move around after delivery, your recovery will be just fine.

Hang in there and try not to worry about this.  You have no way of controlling it.  Sounds like your OB is on top of things.

  • As I'm sure you've read many times on this board, the weight estimates on U/S can be off by quite a bit.  IF it was something you were interested in, would your OB be open to scheduling a c/s from the beginning?  I know many people on here think that you should try for a vag birth, but all that matters in the end is a healthy baby and a healthy mom, if you'd feel better scheduling a c/s (and your OB would approve) then I think you should do whatever you're most comfortable with (maybe wait until you're at the very end to see how things are measuring up).  GL.
  • Your pelvis opens up a lot in the last few weeks of pregnancy.  There is a good chance your baby will fit through just fine.  Wait until it gets closer, have him check again and rediscuss your decisions.  GL!
  • I'm sorry!! I'm sure that your doctor will really look at your options before he thinks youll go into labor.. Maybe a scheduled c-section would reduce your anxiety... It might be worth asking what his opinion would be.. Calm down!!

the narrow pelvis MIGHT be a concern--but my mom is only 4'10" and I was 9 lbs and my sister was almost 8--she had us both vaginally--so it is possible--GL

  • My friend 5' 2" 110 lb. (before pregnancy) friend just pushed out a 10 lb 10 oz. baby boy.  Our bodies are made for this.  Don't get discouraged!  YOU CAN DO ITSmile
  • Your birth exerience is NOT someone else's birth experience. You'd be amazed at what our bodies can do. Until you're in labor, you just never know what can happen. As a pp mentioned, in the coming weeks your hips will literally be widening to make room for this baby (it hurts and it sucks, but oh well). You will probably be just fine!
  • I was told that at 38 weeks, my practice measures you and your pelvis and do an u/s if necessary to confirm the baby can fit through the birth canal.  Ask again and express your concerns to your doc!
  • Don't worry, my baby was measuring 3 weeks ahead since my 32 weeks ultrasound and at the ultrasound on Tuesday she was measuring only 3 days ahead. Everything can still work out.

Some babies grow faster and then slow down, others are growing slower at the beginning and then catch up. My boss' doctor told her that she can expect an 8.5 pound baby, but she ended up having a baby that was around 6 lbs 11 oz, so you never know.

Just relax and take it easy. Those tears will not be good for the baby. Good Luck!

  • Talk to your doctor again about your options.  Your story sounds just like mine.  My baby's head is measuring in the 95th percentile as of last week and at 37 weeks.  My doctor indicated that she would only let me push for 1 hour (3 hours is typical at my hospital too) and she won't use extreme measures (vacuum or forceps) to get the baby out.  She'll opt for c-section earlier than normal.  I'm insistent on giving a vaginal birth a try first, but won't stress myself out and be more open to a c-section now because of the information I have.

  • this is what happened to me with my first pg. my doctor highly doubted that I was going to go into labor on my own, dilate to 10cm, let alone push out a baby from my narrow pelvis. she ended up being right. I labored for almost 24 hours, pushed for 1 and opted for the c-section. they give you the benefit of the doubt because it's your first, and I was happy I tried. you really just never know. after my c/s, the dr said I could have pushed for days and he still wouldn't come out, he was so high up. good luck to you.
