My doctor did an internal and a GBS today. No progress, which is fine. But the reason I wanted to cry ...
We went to our childbirth class last weekend and one of the videos in particular really scared me. It was a small framed woman who was trying to give birth to a larger baby. She was in Stage 1 labor for a very long time, and then was pushing for over 2 hours, the vacuum extractor was used, and then they finally did an emergency c-section. The reason this scared me is because my baby is looking big, and I am small framed (and only 5'0). My doctor has told me we will wait and see if he will fit through the birth canal.
So I asked her today if over two hours of pushing was normal at this hospital before determining baby won't fit, and she told me no - 3 hours of pushing was the cut off at my hospital.
When she did the internal, she also felt around to see how wide my pelvis felt, and she determined it was actually very narrow. Two weeks ago at my 33 week appt I had an ultrasound and baby's head was measuring as if it was at 37 weeks gestation. So anyway, I am now more nervous than ever.
I don't care if the birth is vaginal or c-section - whatever is best. I just don't want to go into a vaginal birth if there is a large disproportion and the likelihood of me needing a c-section is high. It just seems pointless.
I was hoping to come away from the appt with my fears reduced, but now I am just even more unsettled.
Re: 35 week appt - wanted to cry when I drove away
Unfortunately, you'll never know if you can get the baby out unless you go through the process (I think). The good news is that c-section is not the death sentence that people on this board make it out to be. As long as you make a point to get up and move around after delivery, your recovery will be just fine.
Hang in there and try not to worry about this. You have no way of controlling it. Sounds like your OB is on top of things.
Don't worry, my baby was measuring 3 weeks ahead since my 32 weeks ultrasound and at the ultrasound on Tuesday she was measuring only 3 days ahead. Everything can still work out.
Some babies grow faster and then slow down, others are growing slower at the beginning and then catch up. My boss' doctor told her that she can expect an 8.5 pound baby, but she ended up having a baby that was around 6 lbs 11 oz, so you never know.
Just relax and take it easy. Those tears will not be good for the baby. Good Luck!
Talk to your doctor again about your options. Your story sounds just like mine. My baby's head is measuring in the 95th percentile as of last week and at 37 weeks. My doctor indicated that she would only let me push for 1 hour (3 hours is typical at my hospital too) and she won't use extreme measures (vacuum or forceps) to get the baby out. She'll opt for c-section earlier than normal. I'm insistent on giving a vaginal birth a try first, but won't stress myself out and be more open to a c-section now because of the information I have.
