Pregnant after 35

Do you need a full bladder for the 20 wk u/s??

I know for early ultrasounds I did but thought it might be because everything was so small then.

Thanks!

  • I was told to drink 8 oz of water 1 or 1/2 hour prior

  • I didn't have to and my big u/s was 18 weeks. In fact, I stopped by the restroom on my way to the exam room.

  • not necessarily full, but a little something in there.  i was about to explode when i went in for my 20w u/s.  tech asked me to pee b/c it was too much.  she did ask me to leave a tiny bit in though.
  • I've never had to have a full bladder (I've had at least 10 u/s) and they always collect my pee prior to the appt anyway.

  • I'd call to find out.  There seems to be a huge variety in responses to this...

I had to drink 1L, and finish one hour before - I seriously thought I was going to explode!!  Then after she started she made me pee - but "just a little".  WTH??  how can a pregnant lady pee just a little??  Totally unfair

  • I always have to do a urine sample every time anyway, so it's better to go in with a full bladder than an empty one.   But I think by 20w it doesn't matter anymore.

  • I never did. I personally think its because it puffs up the ute to make it easier for the tech to see. Something, IMO, they should be able to do with out the patient having a full bladder. Isn't that why they went to school? Especially with how much they press to find what they are looking for early on, if i had a full bladder, they would have been cleaning up pee, too.

  • I was told to go before I went for the scan because they take a while with all the measurements and with her pressing it might become uncomfortable.
  • Thank you for asking the questions I was wondering about, they never give that information on the confirmation sheets they send out. Good luck on your big u/s, what time is it? Mine is at 4 pm.
  • I called the doctor's office and the answer I got was "I don't think so". LOL

I'll drink something, probably OJ since I heard that's good for getting baby moving, but I'm not going to down 32 oz like I did at 9 wks.  That's just torture! :)

  • Good to know, last time at the hospital they had my drink a 10 oz of water and by the end of the u/s the tech said your bladder is starting to fill up now, it did not take long.
