Pregnant after a Loss

Freakin out (Fumes & Lead Exposure)

Ok...so...over the weekend we had a radon remediation system put in our house.  We didn't realize til we went outside and came back in, how bad the house smelled. So we looked under the crawl space and realized they used a TON of explandable foam and PVC glue under our house, and it was coming up through the vents and we were breathing it in. We opened all the windows and tried to air the house out, but it was REALLY bad. So that night i propped myself up on a bunch of blankets and literally slept with my head on the window sill. THEN...our well test came back and we have an extremely high level of LEAD in our water!!! WTF?!?!?! We can't win!!! We have been drinking the water for 6 years and now since i've been pregnant i've obviously been drinking a lot more. So my DH called the company to ask what it mean to drink the lead and she said "It's really bad for children or elderly people, but you should be ok" then DH said, "Well my wife is pregnant" and the lady goes, "Oh...well she should definitely not be drinking it" AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! SOOO...now i've inhaled toxic fumes and have been drinking lead. WTF?!?!?! At first i tried not to panic but i just went on and looked at the effects of drinking lead while pregnant and it's not pretty. Behavior problems, developmental issues, low birth weight, and the list goes on and on...I called the OB and he's going to call me back at 10:15 when he gets in. I asked if they could do a blood test and check by blood lead level, which is what it said i should do online and they said they think they could...

On top of all that, i still haven't felt movement, and i KNOW that some people dont' feel anything until a few more weeks, but i can't help but to connect the two issues.

Ok, i'm done venting...I could really use some T&P if anyone has any to spare....

Re: Freakin out (Fumes & Lead Exposure)

  • oh my goodness, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. do they not do checks on your water regularly? I'm sure it's hard not to worry about no movement now that you're worrying about this, but I didn't feel any real movement until 20 weeks exactly, so that part really truly is probably not related. I hope the OB can put your mind at ease - hang in there and keep us posted. HUGS

BTW- I'm over 19 weeks and STILL haven't felt movement.  I'm getting pretty antsy about it myself.

I hope you take time to breathe and relax today.  I can certainly understand that it's so hard not to freak out.  (I WOULD!)

And it's still early to feel movement, so please please please try not to worry about that. I'm sure you'll feel those flutters pretty soon. I'll definitely keep you in my prayers. • Ugh, I'm sorry, I would be panicky too.

Let me just try to reassure you about the fumes. Because of my job I have been exposed to fumes a few times - epoxy, varnish, etc. I totally freaked out but LO is doing fine. Our sonographer said he had one of the most perfect anatomy scans she's ever seen. Plus, you are already in 2nd tri and so the risks of teratogenic effects from things like that are so much less than in 1st tri (when I was exposed!). Obviously that's not something you want to breathe every day throughout your pregnancy, but the short term exposure you've had is probably nothing.

The lead is more worrisome, but again that is a cumulative effect. It is good that you caught it now. Getting your blood lead level tested is a very smart idea. From now on you know that you can't drink the water and you'll drink something else. Most brain development occurs during the third trimester so don't feel like you have lost ground with your LO!

  • Ibis- Wow...you have definitely put my mind a little bit at ease. Thank you so much. No one i have talked to has really had an "information" or advice on either issue and just looks at me like somethings wrong, or i'm crazy. You def seem to know what you're talking about regarding the fumes so that's one less thing i need to stress about right now.  AND, it makes me feel better to know that most brain development is later on...i think that is my biggest worry that i'm already starting my child behind every other baby. Seriously, thank you so much for posting that. I really appreciate it Smile
