sleep training moms..please help...

We have been doing sleep training for 5 days..... she was doing really well. the problem was not putting her to bed it was waking up in the middle of the night or a few hours after she went to bed. but everthing went to h-ll last nite. She woke up at 1230 and cried til 130. Is it normal for them to have a set back?

1st-1hr and 30min   2nd- night-1hr  3rd night-27minutes  4th night--woke up twice and cried two minutes each... 5th night 1 hour...Please help or any suggestions.  TIA

  • How old is your LO?  Is it possible that she is hungry?  Maybe teething?

The times you gave- are those middle of the night wakenings or going to bed times?

We've had several set backs.  DS would be sleeping great and then he would start getting more teeth.  After that he went through seperation anxiety and the list continues.

  • my LO did not regress but I think it is common.  I agree w/ the previous post, check to see if your LO has a tooth coming and make sure to fill her up before bed so you can rest assure that when she wakes up it is not hunger. Maybe it was just  a fluke and she will sleep better tonight. GL
  • she is 6 1/2 months. I did fill her up with food. I guess we will see what happens tonight.
  • My DS also regressed. He was FINALLY sleeping 7 hours at night, and then all of a sudden on the 5th night woke up and cried for two hours before I finally gave in and nursed him. I have no advice because now we are back to square one!
  • This is what's called an "extinction burst". It's a possible proven response to any type of training in animals (including young humans). Think of it like an elevator- if you enter an elevator and push the button for the third floor and it doesn't light up, you won't just stop pushing it. You'll continue to push it multiple times until you accept that it isn't going to light up. Your baby is giving one last "hurrah" to make sure that you aren't going to pick him up and feed him. If you do, you've sent mixed messages and now he will assume that he has to just cry really really hard and long and then he will get what he wants.

Best of luck---I know how hard it it is---DD's extinction burst was ridiculously awful but it passed. ?
