dead critter in nursery wall-what to do?

Saturday I noticed the nursury smelled like a** which it shouldn't because there is no baby thus no poop in there yet.  Its gotten worse or at least the bad smell has been maintained.

DH moved the crib and our chocolate lab jumped on the wall and was sniffing-something obviously is dead behind the wall and that is causing the smell.

How can we get the critter out without ripping a hole in the wall or will the smell just eventually go away?

I don't know what to do and its really stressing me out!

  • Ewww, that's so gross! You'll need to get it out and cutting a hole out of the wall really isn't a big deal if your DH (or someone you know) knows how to repair the wall properly.

  • you have to get it out, you can't let it continue to rot behind your LO's wall like that.. I don't think there is any way to get it out without cutting a hole in the wall, but you could try calling an animal capture agency to get their opinions on the matter

  • Ugh, I wouldn't even know what to do! That really stinks! I would imagine the only solution is to cut a hole in the wall and then patch it back up. GL!
  • The problem is that we don't know the exact location of the animal or the smell-we just have an idea because of where our dog went...

I'd trust your dog's nose on this one- does your DH know how to patch the wall back up?

you should call an exterminator or a similar company, they would have the tools to figure out where the animal is and know how to get it out with causing as minimal damage to your property as possible.

  • Ewww.... that smell is beyond awful! I had a dead rat in my office wall once... not cool at all.  Ya'll need to get it out asap!
  • DH said that something died in the wall in the last house he lived in and it smelled bad for a couple of weeks to a month and then it was fine.  He didn't dig it out.  Just thought you might want to know.

  • I'm gonna be honest, living in attached homes in Brooklyn all my life, I've dealt with this many of times. Sometimes we smell that horrible smell but can never find where it is because they could be in the walls, in the floors or the ceilings.  If you don't want to bust a hole in the wall then you could just leave it, it will eventually go away.
  • I would call an exterminator because they have sound equipment to locate the animal and can get to it with minimal damage. You'll just have to patch up the wall. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
  • sound equipment won't hear a dead animal.
    siggy should be here!
  • We had a squirrel die in one of our walls and there was no way to get it out.  It smelled pretty bad for 2-3 weeks and then the smell went away.  We received a few suggestions to put vinegar and charcoal near the wall to help absorb the smell.  That seemed to help a little.
