How not to act.......

I am a Kindergarten teacher in an urban school and today one of my kids had an "accident" in his pants. The kid said he had to go to the bathroom like 20 min. after the ENTIRE class had gone. PLus he has a habit of doing it to get out of class. Here I am all excited it was the end of the day, ready to go in and get the room ready for parent/teacher conferences tomorrow, and I get a phone call. NO sooner do I say Hello then I am getting CHEWED out by this parent about her child peeing his pants. What kind of teacher am I that I don't let a 5 year old go to the bathroom, what is wrong with me? Then she procedes to go off at me about a "bump" her child got on his head at school that I never told her about (there was NO bump there, my assistant can verify it). She claims she wrote a note about it but I never got it. Once I got to say my side of the story, she changed her tune. Why must I be the one that parents lash out on when their child does something? It is not like made this kid pee his pants!!! GRRR!!! I can't wait to have that conference tomorrow! So, note to self, don't be mean to my child's teacher, I know how it feels to get yelled at! ?lol

Re: How not to act.......

  • Why wouldn't she just call to see what happened, rather than listen to a five year old who peed their pants? Did the kid say Miss Jones didn't let me go to the bathroom? What a crazy parent. Have fun with that conference...

  • Yes, he said I wouldn't let him go. I told him he could go after the lesson was over. The parents I deal with unfortunately think everything is someone eles fault and that their children never do ANYTHING wrong. They also think the answer to everything is to go nuts first then hear the teacher's side of the story. Now if only the parents knew some of the stories the kids come to school with about them. ?lol Maybe then they would think twice about the "stories" their children are telling.

  • Parents tend to be ridiculous.  I would definitely lay it on the table at the conference.  Good Luck!

  • Good luck! It does not surprise me, I can tell you I have always seen parents who tend to get defensive with there children.  It is a touchy subject with many, I sort of laugh at it and have always said I hope I do not become like that!
