LClaire

Hey, I know you told me months ago, but I forget.

What kind of detergent works for re-waterproofing dipes?  All of a sudden some of our BGs started leaking.  It may be because my mom's washing machine in Canada is from the 1970s and I used her brand-name detergent up there, but I'm not sure.

At home I use the Costco Kirkland environmentally friendly stuff, and I just noticed yesterday it does have a scent additive.  Maybe that's the problem?

I washed almost all the dipes yesterday and used vinegar in the first rinse, so hopefully that will fix the problem.

But if not, what detergent is best?  Other than the special ones, like Crunchy Clean.

Re: LClaire

  • 1. Where/how are they leaking?

    2. The first thing I'd try is to not use detergent and run them through a couple of hot washes just to make sure everything is really rinsed, then go from there if it doesn't help. If you have buildup, that should help a good amount for you. You can also use a tsp or two of original dawn and then rinse the heck of of them, too.

If you're just noticing the issue after using your mom's stuff and didn't have it before you left, I'd guess that the kirkland's that you've been using is fine and after rinsing them out from using your mom's detergent they will hopefully be good to go again!

If that doesn't work, check out this site:

They rank all of the detergents, but take it with a grain of salt - some people absolutely swear by Tide and it has about as many additives as you can get in a detergent:)  Some of the easy-to-get detergents(at the grocery store, etc) that rank well are Purex F&C, Tide Free, Arm & Hammer F&C, Planet(any version - I know in Denver it was easy to find, but I haven't really looked for it here, so I'm not sure how hard it is to find), Seventh Generation Delicate Care, Sun Free(it's a generic brand and you can usually find it in Dollar Stores in addition to grocery stores).

  • They're leaking around the legs.  But it's really only happened half a dozen times, so far.

Thanks for the tips and resource!

When they leak around the legs and you take them off, are the inserts completely saturated?

  • I use Tide 2x ultra free and clear.  I have never had an issue.  I also add oxy clean baby.  I do a cold water wash cycle with vinegar only, then a hot wash cycle with the tide and Oxy-clean.  Never had any issues whatsoever with that method and have been doing it for  months now.

  • yeah, they are soaked.  so maybe I need to change him more often?  sometimes they're soaked after less than 3 hours.  and he never fusses.  i'm new at this, but can he really pee that much that quickly?  then again, he is eating enough to be 17.5 pounds before he's three months old.

    geesh.

YES!! They're little machines, aren't they?? Depending which insert you're using, you might want to switch from the newborn to the regular insert or even try a prefold trifolded as an insert. If it's soaked when he leaks, I'd guess that that is 99% of the problem - there just isn't anywhere else for it to go. So that's definitely an easy fix for you - change more often or just add some more absorbency and you should be good to go!

  • Thanks!!  I think I'm going to try the pre-fold trick this weekend.  We moved to the regular insert weeks ago, or we double up on the newborn inserts.  And we use one regular insert plus one newborn insert overnight.
