Success after IF

If you had "unexplained infertility"

I hope you don't mind me asking some questions here. I'm usually over on the Secondary Infertility board.

We've gone through all sorts of testing and have been slapped with the "unexplained secondary infertility" diagnosis.

If you had the "unexplained infertility" diagnosis as well, what ended up working for you?

Thank you!

Re: If you had "unexplained infertility"

  • IVF worked for us - twice.  We're officially "unexplained" but Frank's swimmers are lazy and my hormones are mediocre.  Not enough to truly explain our problems though.

  • Officially before IVF #1 I was unexplained after IVF#1 we had a diagnosis.

DOR, Elevated FSH and MFI it took the results of the IVF to give my RE a full picture of what was going on because your typical 3 day bloodwork and medical tests were coming back inconclusive.

  • This is going to sound melodramatic so I apologize, but we had to turn to donor eggs.  Three doctors still can't tell whether there is a problem with my eggs, his sperm, or neither.  It's possible that we have some weird genetic incompatibility that no one can detect.  I make tons of eggs and by all accounts they are fine - but our embryos just poop out.  But after 3 years and every test under the sun, there is nothing diagnostically wrong with either of us so we are technicall "unexplained."

  • Our 4th clomid/iui worked but we lost it.  It then took 3 inj/iui's and 3 ivf's to get our BFP.  We are on cycle # 4 of ttc #2 and will most likely try a few more months or until I convince DH to go back to RE.  GL to you.  BTW, we still don't know what caused our IF since DH's sperm were able to fertilize my eggs on an iui cycle.  Our 1st IVF we had "good" egg quality and our 3rd we ended up doing assisted hatching (did icsi on both).

    Our miracle IVF baby - D 6/09 & J - Surprise! born 9/10!!!
  • We did a couplea rounds of clomid, then 2 IUI's and our first IVF did the trick.  When I asked our RE to speculate as to why it wasn't working for us he thought their might be an issue with the egg getting into the tube.  I had appendicitis so he said this may have had something to do with it but that was pure speculation.

Everything else was picture perfect, eggs, sperm, lining, etc. So, we went with IVF and wala.

GL to you, it ain't easy being unexplained, I imagine worse if it worked the first time around.  We did get pg on our own after just 3 months of trying, but our IF journey took us into 2 years after that.  GL!

  • IVF.  Clomid was a total bust and my RE never even considered AI because of my poor response.
  • After all initial testing I was unexplained until further into treatment. We did 3 IUIs and then 1 IVF where I had a horrible response to max dose of meds, even though my FSH levels and AF count was normal for my age, so then I was classified as DOR. My third IVF worked.

My sister was unexplained as well, and she got pregnant with her 2nd clomid IUI

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Thanks for all the responses. Unfortunately it's not helping me get my hopes up since I just don't see how we could possibly afford financially to take the chance on IVF right now :(

    Congratulations to all of you!

  • My dx was?"unexplained secondary infertility". DS was conceived without intervention on the 3rd TTC cycle. DD was a result of GonalF and b2b IUIs. We got a bfp on our 1st inject cycle. I did 5 rounds of clomid (3 with TI and 2 with IUI) - all a bust.
  • Clomid worked for us! and Clomid is cheap:)  The office visits and u/s's aren't of course, but there is hope!
  • the 1st cycle of clomid, trigger shot and IUI worked for me (and for a friend who was also unexplained)

  • We're unexplained - some of my dh sperm take the short bus to school but not enough/severe to consider it a diagnosis.  After 4 failed IUIs, IVF worked for us.

Things must have figured themselves out b/c we had "surprise" this time around.

  • My history is listed in my bio, but there was absolutely nothing identifiably wrong with either one of us. Everything looked perfectly normal. Each cycle of treatment, the RE was "sure" it was going to work. IVF is what finally worked for us about 22 months of trying. Sorry - good luck!

    ?

lmao!! I nearly spit out my drink!?

  • We did 3 clomid/gonal-f combo IUIs and then moved on to IVF.  Our first IVF worked without ICSI, but they did do assisted hatching on one of the embryos (the other was already hatching on its own at transfer).  We are still unexpalined and when I asked my RE about it on the day we were released to the OB she said sometimes its just a matter of the sperm and egg not meeting up correctly or sometimes it's just pure bad luck.  She said since they were unable to find anything wrong there is a chance we will conceive on our own next time (although I'm more likely to go straight back to her instead of spending too much time trying on our own).
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

    Congratulations to all of you!

Any chance you live near a clinic that participates in a shared risk program?  That was the only way we could afford our IVF.  Definitely look into it.

BTW, I grew up in Central PA!

  • Unexplained here as well.  IVF worked for us.

    Good Luck!

  • IVF worked for us.

I was diagnosed with stage II endo but that was all lasered off and I was diagnosed as "normal" after that, so it was back to "unexplained IF" for us. The 4 Clomid IUIs didn't work.

  • IUI #1 worked for us. I took femara that cycle and had a trigger shot.
  • We're "unexplained" and after 2 failed IUIs, we were successful with our 1st IVF cycle. If I were to do it again from the beginning, I would skip the IUI and go for the IVF.

  • DH has perfect swimmers, me- I have a perfect cycle and we have "perfect" everything else according to the tests, so we were also hit with the unexplained diagnosis. Clomid, Clomid + IUI, Injectibles + IUI didn't work for us. IVF #2 did the trick for us. Good luck.

  • I got pregnant with IVF three times but would m/c between 6 and 9 weeks. My egg quality was always good and I responded well to the meds. I finally got a 2nd opinion and ended up doing IVF with PGD which did the trick. It seems that all but one of my eggs was abnormal which was causing me to m/c.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into this! I'm a transplant to Central PA. I grew up in the Philly area :)
