Is it unsafe to buy a used pump?

I currently have an Ameda and I hate it.  I'm tired of dumping money into new parts just for something else to go on it a week later.

I want to buy a Medela but I really don't want to spend a ton.  So is it hygienic to buy a used pump provided you buy new breast shields and bottles?  Or better yet, is there anywhere that sells the pump only?

Re: Is it unsafe to buy a used pump?

  • I don't see why it's a problem. I got mine from my aunt. Just get new shields, cups, and flanges. You can even use the same tubing since milk never touches it.

Check Craigslist. There are normally some good ones on there.

  • Yes, unsafe.  I'm not sure where to buy just the pump though...
  • It is fine to buy a used pump, as long as you buy new parts for it. Some hospitals actually rent out pumps, so you might want to ask if yours does before you buy anything. I'm not sure if places sell pumps only though.

  • Unsafe unless you find a closed system.  Medela pumps are NOT closed systems, so trace amounts of milk (read: bacteria) can get into the pump and contanimate your milk.

Hospitals rent closed systems.  The ameda purely yours is closed.

Let me go look for the medela info.

  • It's not unsafe, despite what pump manufacturers want you to believe.  My LCs and midwives suggested used pumps because of of cost.  As long as you replace everything (including tubing), you're fine.  You can buy replacement kits for medela pumps at Target, and you can get the tubing from Medela (just call their 800 number.  Don't tell them you got it used, say you used it for your last child.  They'll probably send you the tubing for free.  If not, it's only like $5.)

This is true and not true. Hospital only rent closed units. The only retail closed units are the Lansinoh and the Ameda. Medeals are all open, except hospital grade.

I had so many more issues with my Medela PIS than I ever did with my Ameda or Lansinoh.
