Costco membership- worth it?

Our membership just ran out. We got the membership last year to buy a TV with - saved about $200 so it was definitely worth it for the year. Since then though, we buy toilet paper, Kleenex and lemon juice there... Sometimes fruit or bread. But with only two of us, we don't buy a lot in bulk. Is it worth it to renew the membership, or should I just try to find deals when sales are going on at other stores or go to Grocery Outlet?

Re: Costco membership- worth it?

  • If you have glasses or contacts, it's worth it.

If you eat too much pasta, it's worth it.

I also love that they have bulk organic strawberries and raspberries when they're in season.

  • We only go once a month to buy toilet paper, disposable wipes and diapers (we use them out of the house and at night), pasta, rice, and meat there.  We freeze the meat.  We basically try to get as much of our shelf-stable food from Costco as we can.  We also do our holiday card through them, which costs us half as much as other sites.  For us it is worth the savings.  However, if you are good about shopping sales and using coupons then you might be able to do as well at the grocery.

  • Do you have a friend with a membership?  I mooch off friend's memberships all the time.  I'll go in with them and give them $5 or offer to drive in exchange for using their cards.  It works out better then getting a new card just because we only shop there a handful of times a year.
  • If you have places to store large quanitites of things and you eat a lot of canned stuff, yes. But, given that I've become increasingly picky about what brands and what cans/bottles I buy things in - its not worth it for us.
  • When we had it, it was definitely worth it just in OJ and cereal alone!  We were always able to get our Tropicana and Cheerios in bulk because we went through them in two weeks just between DH and I.  And as the kids get older I'm sure that will definitely increase.  Plus, we also got snacks for the house and for DH for work in addition to produce and chicken which was a staple in the house just for DH alone.  So, it depends.  I'd take a walk through with a friend that has a membership and really scrutinize what you think you might use on a regular basis.  Oh and ketchup and mustard(especially) are staples.  I go through that huge container of mustard in no time at all because I dip a lot of things in it.
  • My gf and I alternate who buys the membership each year, but even if I had to pay every year, it would be worth it.  I buy baby wipes (for when we're out and about), meat, coffee, organic peas/corn, vitamins, infant tylenol/advil... it's worth it!

  • I LOVE having a Costco membership. It saves us a ton each year, especially on gas. Ours has a lot of organic products, but I'm finding what each costco has varies greatly by region.
