3rd Trimester

Backache and menstrual like cramps

I've had a bad back ache and menstrual like cramps since about 9 this morning. It seems like the backache is getting worse. Is it Braxton Hicks? I don't really feel an offical start or stop of a contraction. I just have that feeling like before your start your period. Anyone know what this means?!? Should I take tylonal as a test to see if it gets rid of everything?

Re: Backache and menstrual like cramps

  • I just saw my dr. this morning and told him that I have been having pain in my pubic bone area and back pain and he said that's absolutely normal - it's that area getting ready for the birthing process.

  • I've had the same thing the past three mornings.  It only seems to happen when I am standing up and goes away shortly after sitting or lying down.
  • You never know ... it could be the start of labor. DH had a patient who was just under 35w this past weekend and had these symptoms. She went to the hospital for monitoring and she was in labor and 3cm. If you can, try drinking a lot and laying down for a bit to see if that improves things.

  • I think you are freaking yourself out and need to find something to distract yourself and get your mind off of waiting for labor.  When you start having true labor pains, trust me, you will know.

Actually these are labor pains -- I never knew until they started at 33 weeks for me -- there was no way to time the cramps but when I arrived at L&D I was actually contracting 3-4 min apart. Luckily they were able to stop my pre-term labor.

This sounds like the start of labor for you -- relax and try to get some rest. Sometimes a hot shower takes the back pain away for me. Good luck!

  • From what I've been told from my childbirth ed class and OB, it sounds like real contractions.

It may be the start of labor pains.  The types of contractions she is describing are also common with BHs.  When my contractions started with my DD, I was doubled over in pain with each of them.  So these may be the real deal for her and they may not.  I'm not trying to say she shouldn't listen to her body and call her OB if she is concerned, but she has also posted at least once a day this week trying to speculate on when she's going into labor.  It sounds like she may be in labor or she may just be over analyzing b/c she wants to be in labor already.

  • Hi, first of all let me say that what you are feeling is normal for pregnancy. As far as this being labor pains, I got told by my doctor that it can different for everyone. If your braxton hicks contractions don't normally cause back pain, then I would say that they are the real thing. My advice would be to go on ahead and take some tylenol and maybe take a warm bath to help relieve some of the pain. If you're still feeling the pain in your back and the cramps, then call your doctor. They are trained to answer questions like these and never ever be afraid of L&D. If you try to get rid of this and it doesn't go away, then it never hurts to go in and get monitored. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

I totally disagree with this, especially if it's back labor. I've BTDT and it's not so obvious. And it wasn't for DH's patient this past weekend. She was in labor and definitely did not know.
