3rd Trimester

Questions about pediatrician/OB visits after birth

I wasn't aware that my pediatrician would visit LO in the hospital. Now I have a bunch of questions I should probably already know the answer to.

How soon after birth does the mom go back to OB?

How soon after birth does LO go to pediatrician? - When would I set this appointment up?

Will these two appointments be completely separate events, or do I go back to my OB for both of us?

Gosh I feel ignorant! Can someone just tell me what happens medically in the first month after birth? TIA!!!

Re: Questions about pediatrician/OB visits after birth

  • You probably won't go back to OB until 6 weeks pp, unless there is another issue.?

Layla went to pedi at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks old. The pedi set this appt up in the hopsital, so it wasn't anything I needed to remember.?

  • mine isn't visiting in the hospital.. She's not even affiliated w/ it.

When i interviewed her she told me i have to see her as soon as i get discharged.. maybe the following day or so.

I go back to my OB 6 weeks after delivery.

it's not being ignorant.. it's overwhelming.. there is so much that you need to do it's hard to keep track of everything.

  • How soon after birth does the mom go back to OB? Usually 6 weeks.

How soon after birth does LO go to pediatrician? - When would I set this appointment up? I think a couple days after, then a week or two. We set this up before we were discharged from the hospital.

Will these two appointments be completely separate events, or do I go back to my OB for both of us?  Yes -- two separate things.

Usually 6 weeks for you to go to the OB and two weeks for LO to go to the pediatrician.  However, they may have you come in sooner if needed.  Completely separate events.  Both the OB and the pedi talked to us in the hospital after delivery, and I called and made appointments after we got home.  Make sure you call the insurance and get LO added ASAP after he is born (I think you will need his ss#).

  • I went back to OB 6 weeks after delivery, but I was checked twice before I was discharged from the hospital.

What do you mean about going back to OB for both of you? The OB is only for your. The PED is for the baby. I think it depends on the doctor but generally you take baby into PED weekly after delivery until they see that they are gaining weight normally. Then it spreads out from there depending on your baby's needs and health. Usually after a couple of weeks, you go back every 3 months.

Oh and our PED never came to our hospital because she doesn't have access to where I delivered so an on staff PED saw him until we were discharged.

  • Don't worry, usually the doctor will tell you in the hospital when he/she expects to see you back. As soon as my dr. finished stitching me up, he told me he wanted to see me in 4 weeks in his office. After the pedi looked over DS, he told me to make an appt for one week later. If they don't volunteer the info to you, just be sure to ask them before they leave the room.

  • Usually you go back to the OB at 6 weeks postpartum.  If you had complications during birth your OB may want to see you sooner.and you going to the OB is for you.  Once baby is born OB has nothing to do with them.

For your LO, usually your first Pedi visit is a week after birth, unless of course there were complications.  I know with my second son we were in the Pedi office every day for 2 weeks because of his Jaundice to get blood drawn, got sent to Chindren's on the weekends for blood draws and he wound up under lights at home.  We dealt with all of this for about the first 4 weeks of his life.

Usually though you take your LO at 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and so forth and so on.  After 6 months you go every 3 months until they are 12 months then you go at 18 months, 24 months and then you go yearly after that.

  • No you do not both go to the OB, they are separate appts from here on out :)

Typically this is how it works

YOU go to the OB for a 6 week post partum check unless any other issues come up before then

BABY goes to the pediatrician at about 2-3 days old, then you have a 2 week old check up where they'll repeat your newborn screenings that were done in the hospital, then you go for a 2 month check up where baby gets their first shots. It's like this... (usually)

    2-3 days
    2 week checkup
    2 month visit
    4 mos
    6 mos
    9 mos
    12 mos
    15 mos
    18 mos
    21 mos
    2 year check up
3 year and so on, once a year

  • Your question made me call ours becasue I don't really knwo what to do either. The receptionist told me that the hospital would ask us who our pediatrician is, we tell them. Whichever of the three in that practice that is on call will come down and check our little baby talk to us about when they wants us to come in for appt and then be on their way. She said there is nothing for us to do ahead of time. Our pediatrician's office is in the hospital we are delivering at so the rules may be different for others.

  • As a pp said, I would just ask at the hospital or call the doctor's office and ask.  I go to the OB at 6 weeks pp and the baby has his first pedi appt. at 3 days.
  • Generally, your PP check will be at 6 weeks.

Our pediatrician saw DD at 6 days old for the first out of hospital visit, and DS at 3 days old for a circumcision check.  I set them up as soon as I got home.

Unless your OB is also a pediatrician (I'm guessing that almost never happens, if at all), they will be completely separate.

  • After I had my daughter, I went back to the OB after 6 weeks, and she went to the ped. after 2.  Usually the last day that you are in the hospital, the doctors will sit down with you and discuss when they want to see you, and when to set up the appointments.  Then after you get out, you just call the office and set it all up.  If you have any questions though don't hesitate to ask them during the sit down.  I was confused when I had my daughter too, but now that I am having my 2nd it is all very clear to me.  Best of luck to you.
