Best way to find a babysitter

Other than word-of-mouth. My shift is so crappy (1:30-10) I'm not sure if it will be easy. Not to mention I'm so skeptical of people and have never left A with anyone other than family. But I really don't feel like I can count on my mom 100% anymore. I guess even if I can find someone to watch her for even half the day that would work. Is Craigslist too sketchy? I've been meaning to check the local colleges.

Re: Best way to find a babysitter

  • If I knew, I would maybe leave the house once in awhile without the children...(my fam is 1300 miles away, my husband's is 6 hours away, and my little brother, who followed me out here, doesn't do diapers...I hate imposing on my friends-especially since most of them aren't parents and actually have lives-although a couple of them offer sometimes.)

I can count the number of times we have been away from my kids on like...one hand.

I think that is why I go to the gym so much...

I hope someone has some good answers in this post.

IF you use craigslist, you can probably be really thorough about reference checks, I suppose- or doesn't the Red Cross give referrals?

    Good luck!

  • Hmmm. I don't know about the RC. I'll ask my friend who works for them. I hear ya. I really need to start getting out in addition to needing someone to watch her while I work. I need a BREAK.

I sent my friend a text and told her I would pay her to be my nanny if she would move here and live with me. HA! She'd prob. never talk to me again after a few hours with Amarah.

  • I would look up at the local college and see what's around. When I was in college, there were a bunch of gals who babysat in the evening. They put up fliers in education buildings.

  • I don't know- free room and board plus a salary? someone would go for that.maybe can you co-op with someone else's nanny? like the kids altogether? maybe post on craigslist looking for someone to do that with- I think I would be more comfortable with that than just my kid alone with someone new.

of course, I babysat as a kid, and I can safely say I was a more attentive and anal babysitter than I am a mother- so there are good sitters out there. I was just so determined to do everything perfectly, and be a super sitter...

I got passed around by some parents who recc'd me, (like a babysitting HOOR!!) and they didn't act like it was anything- though it was also not like a full time situation.

you'll find something good. and then get you some boo-tay, girl!

  • Go to a local daycare center.  They prescreen and usually train the staff.  At my sons school, there are plenty of highschool and college girls looking for extra work and they are all GREAT with BD (most will even leave a written report and clean the toys after putting him to bed. Bonus!)
