Are you planning on having a home birth? Or do you want a nurse midwife to deliver your baby in a hospital? Or are you looking for a labor coach?
Your plans for your delivery determine which you want. A midwife will deliver a baby at home, a certified nurse midwife will deliver your baby in a hospital (CNMs work in OB offices) and a doula is a labor coach.
A doula is not going to deliver your baby. A doula is going to support you throughout the birthing process and help you communicate effectively with your delivery team about your birthing desires.
If you have a specific type of birth in mind, you generally look for a provider that works with that birthing style. If you want a midwife but want to deliver in a hospital, like Mrs Destructo said, you want a CNM. If you want a home birth, look for a midwife that specializes in that.
I don't want to be alarmist, but if you are really looking for a birthing coach type person, you need to get a move on it. Most doulas will only take a few clients at a time so that they can be there for the birth. You are getting kinda far along, and you need to take some time to interview people to make sure you are comfortable with the provider and that they will be available around your due date.
More of a labor couch. Definately having her in a hospital. But my DH may not make it, and as awful as this sounds I don't think he's a very good couch, he wasn't the first time around.
I really didn't want anyone extra in the room but I just found out my husband may be deployed. I would be fine just calling a midwife for concerns during early labor. I've just heard great stories about doulas and wanted some opinions. I think I'll stick to my original plan and go solo.
If you want a labor coach type person, I'd say go with a doula. Keep in mind that most doulas are there to support a natural birth process (ie no drugs or minimal medication, no interventions). I'm sorry to hear about your DH being deployed.
