IF you pump at work...

where do you pump?  I have to pump in a community bathroom, which is SO embarassing!  I wish there was a small room with an outlet and a chair so that I could pump in private!  I think my production is affected by my need to hurry and get out of there.

Re: IF you pump at work...

  • with DD I pumped for a year in the bathroom. Yeah, good times let me tell you.

This time I have a room off the breakroom...basically a converted storage closet. I have a plug, chair, table and small fridge. It's wonderful.

  • Contact your HR department and see if a room can be made available. When I returned to work there wasn't a designated room for nursing mothers, but enough of us inquiried (and got our managers involved) that we have our own "Mother's Room". Only the nursing moms have keys to the room and we have worked out a schedule for usage so we all have our privacy.
  • I use a small conference room.  There's a table, chairs and an outlet, I feel very fortunate.

  • I feel very fortunate to have an office where I can close the door and pull the blinds and keep working. ALL women deserve a decent, safe, clean and private place to pump.

Does your state not having pumping laws?

  • I return to work on Monday. My studio has 2 doors, neither of which lock. I could put signs on them, but I worry that people won't pay attention and might just walk in. I plan on asking HR if I can use the client lounge. I really don't want to pump in the bathroom. I agree, I feel like it would affect my production.

  • They just made a "private room" at my company so I plan on using that when I go back in 2 weeks.  There is a chair, sink and fridge in there.  I had to sign some paperwork to get to use the room for OSHA regulations though.  Basically it was just saying that I wouldn't store the milk in any other fridges in the building that were used for food since milk is a bodily fluid.  There are about 7 mothers that will be sharing the room during the day, so it will be interesting to see how the schedule works out.

  • I pumped in my car.  I didn't mind it so much-it was just hard for me to get the time away from my kids (teacher) to do it-so I've stopped pumping at work.  I nurse once a day at work and use my freezer stash for his bottle.  I pump before bed to help supplement my freezer stash.

  • I am fortunate to have my own private office.  When I went back to work I had to ask HR to frost the glass wall and put a lock on the door.  I still had to put a note up not to knock.

Ask your HR if there is something they can do to help.  Sometimes they don't know what employees need.
