3rd Trimester

I can only sleep on my back

I know some people are very anti-back sleeping but I can't sleep on my sides because of my horrible pelvic pain (which I even try to use a pillow between my legs to no avail) and rib pain which is tender to even breath.  Baby will be ok right?

Re: I can only sleep on my back

  • As long as you're comfortable, baby most likely is too. Your body will let you know if something is wrong. I'm the same way and my dr. said it was no big deal.

  • ditto. i was told by the doc that if i sleep on my back and its an issue i WILL know. my body will tell me that its too much weight.
  • I asked my OB about sleeping on my back because I kept waking up on my back even though I'd fall asleep on my side. She told me it isn't the worst thing I could do and that once it was hurting anything to sleep on my back it wouldn't be comfortable anymore. However, she did tell me that if I am worried that I should elevate my head or feet while on my back. These two things will keep from being flat on my back.

  • I have the same thing and I sleep however is comfortable. He kicks no matter which position I'm in. If he weren't getting enough oxygen (the reason side sleeping is supposed to be so important) he wouldn't be as active so I don't worry at all.
  • I just asked my Dr. about this yesterday.. She said as long as you aren't flat on your back it's fine.. She suggested putting a pillow behind your back (the long way) just to take some pressure off your abdomen.. It's actually pretty comfortable =)
