3rd Trimester

Crap I am screwed!!!!

I have no idea what to do...

My Dh was self employed but work got really slow and so he started working for BIL against his better judgment(long monster in law story ) and we got on their health insurance plan, then I found out I was pregnant. The working situation  got to be intolerable and work picked up(for his business) so my husband decided to stop his employment with BIL's company.(he just assumed we could get cobra for the rest of pregnancy) I am 28 weeks pregnant and our insurance will run out at the end of the month. According to SIl in order to get COBRA we would have to pay the entire premium out of pocket.(what they were paying and what we were paying) I am thinking this will be way to expensive so I checked into state assisted health plan until after baby is born. Well, my doctor does not accept this type of insurance so I would have to switch OB"S. Would another OB accept me at this point in my pregnancy?  I am soo stressed over this and embarrassed that I would have to get state assistance but I don't want to try freebirthing *joking*

Re: Crap I am screwed!!!!

  • you can't bite the bullet and do COBRA for hte next 3 months?

  • If it were me and I were in your shoes I would do whatever I had to do to have some type of medical assistance for my delivery and deal with the other stuff later, as it comes. It's stressful to think about and you don't need something else piled on your shoulders that could affect you or that baby. One day at a time. Ask your friends and see what they say.
  • I switched to midwives at 37 weeks pregnant. It's never too late. First, apply for the assistance. Then call around to find someone that accepts it. No biggee!

  • See if they have a deal for self-pay (non-insured) patients.  My hospital/doctor has a deal where labor and delivery are bundled into a discounted package, plus you get discounts on almost everything not included in that (ultrasounds, etc).  Check into it!
  • Since it's family that your husband was working for, can they continue the insurance coverage through the rest of your pregnancy?

Because I hate to say it - but what you have now is a pre-existing condition and it's going to be hellacious to find coverage until after the baby is born.

  • You can def switch docs at this point.
  • You can change OBs.

Pregnancy is NOT a preexisting condition.

  • Crappy situation; I'm really sorry.  :(

Get a few recommendations for OBs that accept the state medical program.  Ask your current OB, too, for a rec.

  • I thought they recently changed COBRA and the government is picking up a good portion of the employer's old tab?

Yes, you can still change OBs. You can always do that, it will just mean having your records sent from one place to another.

If all else fails get the state assistance, its doesn't get you great choices for doctors generally, but you need prenatal care more than your pride.

    Hang in there.

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies, I am going to look into all the options you have given me (great ideas) and see what I come up with. I knew if I posted this you guys would help me brainstorm! I have never been in this situation and was kind of scared but you all have talked me out of my tree, lol.

Time to pick myself off, dust myself off and get this taken care of...

  • Get the assistance, you can definitely still switch. Good luck!

This.  You can always switch.  Figure out your insurance first then start calling.  But, do it quick!

  • I'd pay the full COBRA premium until you deliver...chances are it will be cheaper than paying out-of-pocket or doing a high-deductible individual insurance plan.

I was in a similar situation with my first pregnancy.  When you're self-employed and on individual insurance, you CAN be denied coverage for pregnancy. It's not the same as group insurance that is protected by federal laws.

The government picks up part of COBRA only if he was laid off.  Sorry, I don't have any suggestions other than the ones already given to you.

  • I would go with the gov. assistance. I had it with DD. IF you can get coverage right now. Finding a doctor to switch is not the problem. Your child will also be covered for some period of time afterwards. Depends on state i think. I have my own now...but when i found i was preg. my company had a HORRIBLE/EXPENSIVE plan (family business) and i needed the help.

When i arrived at the hospital the paper work was so easy and everything went great. I sent my caseworker a thank you card.

  •  There is absolutely no way that we could afford to pay COBRA for 3 months, so I completely understand the OP's position.

In most states, you'll always qualify for state insurance if you are pregnant assuming your income is within limits. Most OB's don't like you to switch for "no reason", but I work with moms all the time who don't receive pre-natal care until 30+ weeks, and we're always able to get them in to see someone.

Another option to consider would be to ask your OB if you can set up a payment plan with them for the costs related to the duration of your pregnancy. Then the hospital could bill the state insurance for your actual delivery. That way, you'd still have coverage, but wouldn't have to switch OB's since you'd be paying them cash.

  • You can still switch doctors.  I switched between by 28 and 32 week appts.  Get the assistance and then call around or get suggestions on who you should see from your current doctor.
