3rd one: 39 weeks. Hurt like hell. He swept my membranes without first mentioning he was going to do that. Thx doc.
I could have skipped that first one. Told me nothing. But then again, I was already in the "position" as I was getting the GBS test so it wasn't a big deal.
35 weeks. She was down there swabbing for GBS, so she figured she might as well do an internal just to see if the BH contrax I'd been feeling were doing anything. I didn't decline cause I was curious!
ETA: And it was really uncomfortable, but not painful.
I've had one, and will only have one unless they can give me a good reason for taking my pants off. And really, if my husband can't get my pants off, I doubt my OB can.
I had one last week at 36 weeks JUST to check to see if he's head down (OB didn't think he was the week before). I also had my GBS swab, so I was already undressed. I opt out for the rest of them ... It doesn't matter to me how dilated/effaced I am.
I had my first one at 36 weeks. It really didn't hurt. Just a little uncomfortable, but it only took a second. I wasn't asked if I wanted one, but I'm glad I got one and knew how things were progressing.
My first internal was 36 weeks, mostly because they needed to check for GBS (which I have unfortunately) which meant undressing anyway. I wasn't open or soft and the baby was head down. At 37 she didn't do one, and she didn't mention if I'd be having one tomorrow - but I'm guessing not.
I see all the ladies on here knowing how big the doctor estimates the baby is and how far effaced and dilated and all that and I don't know any of those things for myself and I'm okay with that.. I think if I wasn't making progress it would frustrate me, so better to not know.. though my lack of knowing is driving MIL up the wall.
Was it painful? The first one I thought was painful, but the 2 I've had since then were just uncomfortable.
If you had the choice would you get them weekly starting at 36 weeks? probably not...although now I like knowing if things have changed from the week before.

**My doctor is giving me the option to get internals otherwise said he wont bother with them I cannot decide.
my first internal was at 34 weeks (i'm considered high risk) and had one once a week ever since. They didn't hurt at the beginning but the past two weeks they hurt really bad. Today's especially, to the point where i though i was going to poop -it actually gave me the urge to go to the bathroom. I think it's b/c she keeps going deeper to check if the head is still in the right position.
edit -also, btw.. i bled right through my pants today from my visit -so dont forget to put a pad in there before leaving.
First one at 37 weeks. Not painful, just uncomfortable. I chose to get it then, by Dr. doesn't normally start until 38weeks. I did have some cramping afterwards.
I haven't gotten one yet (at 35 weeks) and am going to decline them till the VERY end. I figure finding out that I'm starting to dialate doesn't really do much for me except make me anxious to get this show on the road, but doesn't actually indicate that anything is going to happen.
I'm planning to wait until I'm in labor, or unless I go way overdue. MW will do them on request, but says they are pretty pointless and uncomfortable to do "just because."

I just got back from my first one. It was optional and I planned to skip it until I got there and my curiousity got the best of me. It was painful, but only for a quick few seconds. I would not start getting them at 36 weeks.
I have to have them every time I go (every week or every other week) to check my cervix because of all my contractions. At this point, they are not painful just uncomfortable. I guess the further along you are, the more uncomfortable they are.
Re: Poll: Internals
I think I had my first at 35 or 36 weeks and it was optional. I chose to get it because i was curious as to what my progress was.
They're uncomfortable but not really painful.
1st one: 36 weeks. Not painful at all
2nd one: 38 weeks. Slightly painful.
3rd one: 39 weeks. Hurt like hell. He swept my membranes without first mentioning he was going to do that. Thx doc.

My first was 36 weeks--just uncomfortable.
At 37, it was a little more uncomfortable.
At 38, it hurt so bad!
Not looking forward to tomorrow's, but I'll do it anyway!
