3rd Trimester

What do ya'll think?

I posted this on the baby names board too but I though some 3RD TRIMESTER mommas would understand my strange thinking a bit better.

My husband and are having a little boy. We loved the sound of Zachary with the middle name William. (It's a tradition in DH's family) However I can't stand the way it's spelled. I think the H in the name makes it look like it would be pronounced like CH as in church not CK as in quack. I first thought to spell it like some people do: ZACKERY. The problem is I hate the E. So I thought up spelling it: ZACKARY. My husband dose not care. I love it but am worried the people will make fun of it because of the odd spelling. What do you guys think?

Re: What do ya'll think?

  • Zachary is how you spell it.  I think you are being ridiculous.

  • I don't see a problem with it. And if you LOVE it... use that spelling!
  • I personally prefer the Zachary spelling... probably b/c that's my brother's name and how I'm used to seeing it.  The other versions look weird to me.
  • Personally, I'm against alternate spellings of names.  My full name has an alternate spelling and it's been nothing but a PITA for my whole life.  So I wouldn't do it, but that's just me.

  • spell it Zachary. that is how that name is spelled. I HATE when people get creative with the spelling of a very common/basic name.

  • I don't know any Zacharys who don't spell it that way.

No one is going to pronounce your LO's name like Zatch-ary.  I promise.

  • I think that Zackary is not too far out there but I personally would never pronounce Zachary with a "church" sound.

  • You think people would make fun of you for spelling it weirdly yet they would not know how to pronounce the normal spelling? I'm confoosed.
  • oh no.  Spell is the normal way.  Your child will thank you.

This was also a thought or worry. I would hate to have to teach him to say... "my name is Zackary with a K not an H."

Also.... the nick name common with Zachary is Zack right? People spell that with a K? Maybe I should spell is with the H and call him Zack.

I've always seen the shortened version spelled as "Zach"

  • There are a lot of words in which CH is pronounced as a K sound: stomach, school, technical, character, choir, orchestra...

I prefer traditional spellings in names. I don't think people will make fun of the alternate spelling, they may just have trouble getting it right every time, but my name is spelled the traditional way, and people always misspell it with an alternate spelling.

That's what i would think.. if it's a really short name than its fine, but having to constantly spell your name (one that's suppose to be simple) must be annoying.

  • I promise you that people will know how to pronouce "Zachary". If, however, you don't mind people misspelling his name for the rest of his life, then you can spell it however you choose.
  • I would go with the traditional spelling of the name. I don't go to the CHurch sound in the middle of the name at all. When I read Zachary it has always had the CK sound to me.
  • People will always see that spelling and wonder if you and DH were uneducated or just didn't know how to spell, neither of which is a good thing.

  • I feel the same way about it on the 3rd Tri board as I did on the Baby Names board - it will not be mispronounced spelled Zachary, because that is the most traditional spelling for that name.  And the NN can be spelled either Zack or Zach.

Yes  There you go. I don't think you'll have an issue with anyone calling him za-ch-ury since it is the standard spelling. BTW: DS's middle name is Zachary-Zack

    This.

NO one will ever get the spelling right and it will only cause him to be annoyed later in life.

  • I understand where you're coming from. We're naming our son Xavier and we almost didn't because I couldn't stand that big "X" in his name when it was written out! BUT we loved the name and I didn't think that was a good enough reason not to name him that. Basically my love for the name outweighed my opinion on how it was written out. With all that being said- I think you should leave it the way it is. YOU may have a problem with it, but your son will just be accustomed to it and probably won't care at all.
  • Not that this contributes in any way, shape, or form to this discussion, but I do have a friend who spells his name ZAQ.  And yes it is in all caps. All the time. :)

Yes  This exactly.  I know a woman named Rachel but it is spelled Racheal for some unknown reason.  It just looks bad and she has had to correct people her entire life.
