Refinishing furniture is easy if you are open to paint verses stain. I haven't tried stripping stain to re-stain.
All we are doing is using sanders, both a rotary and a small mouse to get into corners etc. Some of the stain is left behind but as long as you have broken through the surface of the finish then the primer and paint will adhere.
We have also stripped paint from a banister and stained it. That took a long time to finish but it was so worth it in the end. If you ever have questions about most home renovation projects I can help.
Oh and if you ever get on facebook (hint, hint, nudge, nudge) then you can see some of the renovations and project we have taken on.
Re: **Orangeluck**
I'm so impressed and I do want to see pictures. It's so inspiring to me to see what other people can do. My mom stripped and re-stained a kitchen table and 4 chairs when I was younger and although it turned out great I just remember what along process it was. Then ther is my MIL who slapped a bunch of white paint on an old high boy and it looks horrible (I know there was no sanding or priming involved).
I might be looking into this more in the spring and I'll probably ask you for advice then. Can I ask you now though- do you think I could do this in the garage on a drop cloth in the winter or should I really wait until the temps are above freezing? I don't think I could get DH to carry the pieces down to the basement for me.
