Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Waking a sleeping baby

I recently started swaddling my son at night and the results have been great.  However, I'm nervous to let him go too long without eating.  For the past 3 nights he's slept from 7pm to 2am when I have had to wake him to eat.  I am formula feeding.  My husband thinks I should let him sleep until he wakes himself up but 7 hours seems like a long time to me.

At my last visit he was only sleeping 2-3 hours at a time so I never asked my peditrician about waking him up.  Anyone know how long you should let a 5/6 week old sleep?

Re: Waking a sleeping baby

  • IMO, as long as he is continuing to gain weight, let him sleep.  Once LO turned one month, I stopped waking her up to eat.

  • If he is gaining weight and eating plenty during the day, then let him sleep! :)
  • My daughter is just over 6 weeks old and sleeps from 9p to 5a and I don't wake her, and believe me she is getting plenty to eat!
  • I agree with the pp.  Let him sleep and count your lucky stars that he's a good sleeper.
  • once babies regain their weight you should let them sleep.  My daughter started sleeping 6-7 hours a night a 3 weeks.  As long as he doesn't have any medical issues let him sleep and your dr. doesn't tell you to wake them up.  That is how they get themselves on a schedule.  He will make up for the lost feeding during the day most likely anyway.  If you feel better just keep track of how much he is eating. This is my opinion anyway.
