getting a hospital bill estimate

this might sound silly, do you just call the hospital where you're delivering and ask how much it costs to deliver a baby and then tell your insurance company the total so they can give you their estimate with your specific insurance plan?

Re: getting a hospital bill estimate

  • We called the insurance company to let them know we're PG (apparently ours wants us to call) and we answered some questions. They then told us our co-pay amount.

  • I've tried getting estimates from the hospital it's a PITA.

But, our insurance website has a cost estimator.  Maybe see if yours has something similar?

  • i am wondering this myself.. i think that usually you just have to cover your hospital co-pay and insurance should cover the rest unless they notify your otherwise? but im not really sure Confused
  • I have an 'Explanation of Benefits' book that my insurance company mails out each year. Then I can call them with questions.

    Depends on your coverage.

We only have 80% coverage of the delivery.

  • I work where I get my prenatal care, so I have a little bit of a heads up on knowledge there (actually, I work right in the billing department). I go to the doctors for all of my routine prenatal appointments and at the very end when I deliver, they (the doctors office/ my work) bill out the doctors fees of the delivery charges. There will be additional fees for the actual hospital stay, circumcision, anestheseologist (sp?).. etc. SO if you go to a doctors office for your appts. but will be delivering at the hosital, I would call both the doctors office AND hospital to find out what their charges are for delivery. They can give you an estimate, which you can give to your insurance company and they can tell you what you may have to pay. It is sometimes helpful to the insurance company (for more accurate estimates) if you have the procedure codes that you would get from the doctors/hospital. Hope this helps..

  • The average birth at the hospital where I work is between $6,000 and $8,000. Obviously this can vary depending on the birth, but that seems to be our range for the majority of the women.

  • We actually got a letter from the hospital this week outlining all our costs and requesting we pay our $300 out of pocket expenses now. We are hoping to be able to deliver in the birthing center, in which case, we have no OOP expenses except a $40 copay.

  • Our hospital sent us an estimate after we pre-registered that they got after consulting with our insurance company.  We didn't have to request it or anything, it just came in the mail.

  • Our doctor sent us an estimate after our first visit. I then called my insurance and let them know, just to give them a heads up. The woman was able to give us an estimate of what we should expect to pay... but its also excluding other costs.

It was good to know that early on what we should expect to pay in the end.?
