3rd Trimester

Vaccine

So I don't want to freak anyone out but I just had a friend call me and tell me this story. She knows a girl who was supposed to have a c-section last Thursday to deliver a healthy baby. The Friday before that, she had the H1N1 vaccine and on Monday delivered a stillborn. I am in no way saying that the vaccine caused it...  but it is too much of a coincidence. Don't ya think? Will you be getting it?

Re: Vaccine

  • i think i will now be waiting until after he is born, thanks for posting it. not saying that is why the baby died, but i'd rather not risk it. it still isn't available around here so i doubt i'd be able to get it before he comes anyway. IF HE EVER COMES OUT THAT IS!

  • No problem. That is why my friend called to tell me about it. She said that she would feel horrible had she not told me and something were to happen. I have decided against getting it also. GL to you! Hope you have a happy and safe delivery!
  • If anyone has concerns on the H1N1 vaccine they should really contact their healthcare providor or the H1N1 national hotline (866 278 7134).

There is alot of misinformation out there.

Very sad that the friend's baby was still born, I can't imagine that kind of pain.

I had the H1N1 shot on Friday.

  • I'm getting so much conflicting information about getting the vaccine.

It may be moot point anyways as it is still not available here and they are expecting it to arrive early November after my EDD. In Canada they are adding an adjuvent (sp?), essentially a booster but are advising pregnant women to get a vaccine without the adjuvent. The adjuvent free vaccine will not be available until even later.

Also reading local news items saying my province has the highest H1N1 rates and pregnant women in third tri (US!) are the most susceptible to extreme H1N1 cases and death. Some studies are reporting that pregnant women have a 25% chance of dying if they contract H1N1.

Oh, and I work in a huge office tower and asked my boss if we would be told if there were reported cases of H1N1 in the building (which will be my cue to go early for mat leave) and he said he wasn't sure.

I am working from home today and will be asking to do the same and/or work in the evenings/early mornings if I need to be in the office.

  • This post is ridiculous. You have no idea other than one anecdote as to the safety of the vaccine. You then post it on a message board with women in their third trimester of pregnancy. Everyone here can say that at this point in life, one of the worst things that could happen would be a stillbirth. There is NO evidence other than your own uneducated theory that the H1N1 vaccine was related to this baby's death. It is sad, and I am terribly sorry for the family that lost their child, however I think that the decision as to if you are getting the vaccine or not should be based on you and your Dr. and not some story you heard from a friend about someone she knows.....

    Way to spread the panic.

Yes It is definitely a sad story, but this is not the forum to spread mass hysteria to a bunch of women in their third trimester - the group most at risk of contracting the virus and the group most succeptible to contracting the virus.

Sorry but I agree with this.  A stillbirth is a terribly sad thing, but hinting that it in anyway could be related to the H1N1 vaccine is ridiculous.  There is enough misinformation and ignorant people out there already.  Anecdotal evidence (basically stories) are pointless.

Why in the world would someone listen to the story of someone on the internet instead of their medical professional who has multiple years of training and experience!?

The H1N1 is made the same way as the seasonal flu, and if it had been identified earlier it would have been in the seasonal shot.  It has had the same amount of development as the seasonal shot, the same amount of testing, and is made from and of the same things.

Seriously if I didn't get it and something happened to my baby I could blame it on that too!  I, for one, intend to do what my medical professionals say.  The whole family will be getting the H1N1.

    Ditto both of these.

No, I don't think the fact that she got the H1N1 vaccine a week before giving birth to a still born baby is "too much of a coincidence".  It's no more of a "convenient" coincidence than attributing the death of her baby to the fact that she had pizza for lunch last Thursday.

i asked my VP of HR if they can tell us if there is exposure in our area for the sake of pregnant people, etc, and there's not much they can reveal even if they know due to HIPPA.

  • The point of my post was not to create any kind of hysteria. I was simply repeating a story that my friend told me. I absolutely agree that you should listen to your healthcare provider and not someone on the internet. That is why I stated that I was in no way saying that it was caused from the shot. But I would rather know all sides of the risks and/or benefits before I make my own decision. You don't have to be rude to me, because my agenda was to inform others of what I was told this morning.

How is it "too much of a coincidence"?  Sad to say, but stillbirths happen all the time.  Many women who get the H1N1 vacc will have miscarriages, PTL, etc.... but they would most likely have happened anyway.  People are just trying to be freaked out by this vaccine.

  • Your post focused on a baby dying, and then you tied in the "coincidence" of the mom getting the H1N1 Vac. just before..... From your post, your agenda certainly was not clear and all you did manage to do was to look like an uninformed, and panic stricken simpleton.
  • Well I am not uninformed. My mom is a pediatric nurse practitioner and my sister is a general practice nurse practitioner. Also, I talked to the nurse at my doctor's office about it. So no, I am not a "uninformed, panic stricken simpleton". I don't know why some of you on here attack people for simply telling a story. In the future, I know what to say and surely what not to say to avoid being attacked.

Saying "it is too much of a coincidence" makes it more than telling a story.
