Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Counting on you guys' wisdom and experience.

She slept from 9:30-6:30 this morning.  Usually, she goes back down for another couple of hours after her 2nd morning feeding (the first is usually around 4 or 5 AM), and is up for the day around 8:30.  I should've known something was up when she didn't wake for her 1st morning feeding.  But I got my hopes up that this was the start of sleeping longer through the night.

NOPE!  She didn't go back down after the 6:30 feeding, and she's only napped twice for 20 minutes a piece.  Usually I swaddle and nurse her to sleep, but that's not cutting it anymore apparently, because I think she's waking up when she realizes she's not nursing anymore.

She's not hungry, she's not wet/poopy.  I've tried not swaddling her, drowsy but awake, Ferber method.  (Which I know now she's still too young for--didn't work well at all.)  She calms down as soon as she sees me.  What the heck is going on?!?

  • Maybe she's not tired.

  • Once you get used to a schedule, LO's have a way of switching it up on you.  I`m sure nothing is wrong.  She could be going through a growth spurt or teething.  But really 9:30PM to 6:30AM is AWESOME.  I wish my 7 mo. old would sleep that well.

If you think she might be teething, try a little tylenol.  It may help her take a nap.

FWIW my DS got his first two teeth around 4.5 months and he threw us for a loop with his sleeping at that point

9 hours at night is fine?  All the baby books I've read so far say "babies sleep for about 10-12 hours at night, and 4-5 hours during the day during 3 or 4 naps."  DD has NEVER done that, and even when she was sleeping well during the day, she'd never sleep more than 3 naps of 45 minutes each.  I'm starting to think the baby book authors know nothing.  :P

She's yawning, her eyes look glassy, and the skin all around her eyes is red.  She's tired.

  • At 4 months old 9 hours is great, trust me.

  • I also agree that she might not be tired.  Most babies nighttime sleep is 9-10 hours, which is what she did and STTN.  And maybe she's only sleeping for 20 minutes at naps because she's not tired.  Have you tried keeping her up longer between naps?  How long is her awake time?

See my response above.  Also, she's awake between 2 1/2- 3 1/2 hours between naps.  When she took 45 minute naps, she would be awake 2 hours in between.

I'm worried she's not sleeping enough.
