Newly Pregnant and New to the Area

Hello -

My husband and I just relocated to the area (Rochester) from California two weeks ago. Last week we found out that we are pregnant (Yay!) Because we;re so new to the area I could use recommendations on pretty much everything. I need a good OBGYN, and would appreciate opinions on where to deliver, etc.  Are there any prenatal yoga classes in the area?

Any help would be so much appreciated, as I am feeling a little overwhelmed!

Re: Newly Pregnant and New to the Area

  • Congrats and welcome!

I delivered my DD at Beaumont in Troy and my DS at Beamont in Royal Oak, had positive experience at both locations. Good OB to recommend - Somerset OB located at Big Beaver and Coolidge area. When it comes to prenatal yoga classes, I had a hard time to find one myself when I was pregnant but there might be some classes that have just started, maybe pregnant girls on this board would know more.

We will have a get together on 30th(location TBD) if you can come it would be great!

  • Hi! I am in a similar situation so I am interested to see the responses. I'm not pregnant, but I have a 6 month old and my husband and I are moving to Royal Oak in a few weeks from Chicago. How do you like Michigan so far?

    ETA: Congrats!!

  • Depending on where exactly in Rochester you are, the two closest hospitals are probably Troy Beaumont and Crittenton.  Crittenton is a smaller hospital compared to others in the area, but I"ve heard good things.  I haven't delivered there, but I've gone there for other surgeries and have had a really good experience.  I delivered DS at Troy Beaumont and had a really good experience there.  They're smaller than Royal Oak and what's nice is it's not a teaching hospital like Royal Oak, so there's less people wanting to bug you.

As far as doctors, I ended up going to Oakland Macomb OBGYN (www.oaklandmacombobgyn.com)  They delivery strictly out of Troy Beaumont.  If you go back a few posts, there's some suggestions of other practices as well.

Let us know if you have any other questions.  I'm pretty close to Rochester, so I know the area fairly well

  • Welcome to the board and to Michigan...and congratulations!

Both Troy and Royal Oak Beaumont have great reputations.  I delivered out of RO and couldn't have asked for a better experience.  I am also very happy with my OBGYN office...Michigan Womens Health Institute, 909 W Maple Rd - Suite 110, Clawson MI 48017

  • Hello and welcome!

I highly recommend Troy Beaumont. I delivered there just over 2 weeks ago and had a wonderful experience.  I also recommend my OB, Kingswood OBGYN in Bloomfield Hills. I can't say enough great things, but I know that Oakland Macomb is HIGHLY recommended OBGYN group amongst women on the board.

Also, some awesome restaurants in Rochester:

Sumo Sushi (their salad is awesome, and if you like sushi, they are the best (they have some cooked rolls for the next 9 months!)

Thai Inn has the best Thai food. Hands down.

  • Congrats, and welcome to the area!!

I live in Royal Oak, and plan on delivering out of Royal Oak Beaumont... but my sister delivered out of Troy Beaumont a little over a year ago and was extremely pleased with it.

As far as OB?s go, I second Somerset OB-GYN in Troy.  I got the recommendation for them from this board when I first found out I was pregnant, and I am VERY happy with them so far!

  • Welcome! I also recommend Kingswood OBGYN in Bloomfield Hills. I see Dr. Sarvis (female) but have heard great things about Dr. Bartholomew (male). We will be delivering at Royal Oak Beaumont but they are affiliated with both Troy and Royal Oak.

Dr. Bartholomew  delivered my daughter, and I see Dr Sarvis normally. Ditto.

  • Thanks for the congrats and recommendations! It is totally overwhelming trying to get settled and find new doctors. Does anyone have any recs for a good PCP?

I like Michigan so far. It is really pretty, but it has been really hard not knowing anyone...and is TOTALLY different from where we lived before.

SandyL:  I saw on another posting that you asked how the drive was from Chicago...we did it on our last leg of the drive here and it wasn't bad at all, you could easily do it for a long weekend trip if you get homesick or want to go back for an event! I think you will really like Royal Oak, it looks like a fun place to be.

  • I live in Livonia, MI and go to St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in Troy MI, on Livernois N of Big Beaver. You are welcome to visit, and check it out.

Several Doctors are members and know all the Hospitals and lots of Doctors in your area and can answer all your questions.

  • Hi and welcome!

I'm from California also and just moved to the Rochester area in June. I'm 26 weeks pregnant. I also a L&D nurse at Troy Beaumont and I think it's a fantastic place to deliver (and work). I used Dr. Masters and Zekman off of Rochester Rd and M59 - they deliver out of St. Joe's Mercy Oakland mostly, but will deliver out of Beaumont if you request it.

If you have any questions about the area page me! I don't know anyone here yet, really, so I know how you feel!
