could cinnamon cause little red bumps around mouth?

i don't get it.  DS didn't eat anything new.  he just ate applesauce with cinnamon & string cheese.  i switched from earth's best to treetop applesauce...  but both of those are organic.  i always add a few shakes of cinnamon to his applesauce, but today he has red bumps around his mouth.

anyone ever have this happen?  is this cause for concern?

  • I don't know if cinnamon could have caused it but I don't think it is cause for concern unless it spreads or he gets any other symptoms.

  • It's possible.  Did the cinnamon come in the applesauce, or is it the same stuff you're always adding?

I get blisters on my tongue from cinnamon, but it only started happening when I got to be 18 or 19.

  • Cinnamon is a high alergen food. So it's possible.  And, true allergies tend to show up after one or more exposures...As long as it doesn't get worse I would be to worried...just avoid it for a while.

  • Yep.  It primarily happens from something that's high in cinnamon content though.  Maybe you added more than normal?

Fake cinnamon does it too--so I get blisters from gum, red hots, cinnamon flavored toothpaste, etc.

    It's weird.

  • I get redness around my mouth from anything even remotely spicy (cinnamon, mexican food) and even things that aren't all that spicy.  I just have pretty sensitive skin.  It doesn't bother me in any other way buy some redness around my mouth.  My brother is the same way.  Maybe that is S's issue too?

  • When DD was younger (like under 12 months), I tried adding cinnamon to her baby oatmeal and plain yogurt to make it taste better, and afterwards, the skin around her mouth was red and irritated. No bumps, though. She's had cinnamon since she's gotten older without any issues.

It's interesting that the bumps just appeared now. I'd hold off on adding cinnamon for a couple days, then try again to see if the bumps reappear.

  • I used to have a similar reaction when I chewed Big Red gum. This happened when I was younger, so I stopped having any cinnamon gum or candy. I can have it now without a problem. I'd just avoid it and mention it to the pedi at his next visit.

  • Ds's mouth and face turn bright red anywhere that comes into contact with cinnamon (and also hummus made with sesame seeds). Our pedi said it's an allergy but since the reaction is on the mild scale, it's possible he'll outgrow it.

  • Yes, DD recently developed a skin sensitivity to cinnamon.  We were told it's not actually an allergy, just a skin sensitivity because cinnamon is such a strong spice and her skin is just delicate.  She's fine if it's mixed into something really well (like yogurt) or cooked in something but it can not be on top of what she's eating (she had been eating toast with cinnamon on it when we first noticed it).
