forget to buckle in LO?

Indifferent In the past week I've had to take DS in a different car two times, & have forgotten to buckle him in. I have the Chicco snap in holder but these times I just used the seatbelt over the top since I wasn't in my car. The first time he had a blanket over him and just put the seatbelt over, only to realize a mile later I hadn't buckled him into the carseat. Then this weekend I'm riding with my mom and 30 minutes later DS is screaming so I climb in the back & see that I never buckled in his carseat! Anyone done this? I feel so stupid for forgetting such a big thing. I only wonder whats to come in the future if I'm already doing this.

Re: forget to buckle in LO?

  • If I buckle DD into her seat while its in the car I have a habit of forgetting to buckle in her seat. I've done it 3 times. Embarrassed

  • My DH has forgotten to buckle her in twice. Its easy to forget if you put them in the carseat and cover them up! We always double check now, just incase. Maybe if I left her carseat in the car I wouldnt ever forget.

I cant even imagine what would happen if we were in an accident and I had forgotten to buckle her up. I would never forgive myself!

    Your not alone, though

We did this exactly a few weeks ago.  We didn't realize until we got home.  It was only a five minute drive from our friend's house, but I still almost threw up when I realized he wasn't buckled in.

  • Like you forgot to buckle the harness.  I always make sure to do it in the house so I don't forget.

  • Yes!!! I did this a few weeks ago and never told anyone!

  • It happens.

But, it should only happen ONCE. Learn your lesson and do NOT do it again.

I make sure that any time M is in his car seat, he's strapped in. Always.

  • Uh, NO. I've never forgotten and I have (2) LO's to strap in!!!!
  • I did it once and I'll never, ever do it again.  It was only a short trip, but I about had a freaking anxiety attack when I realized what we'd done.  I spent about half an hour hugging and apologizing to Eli.  I felt so awful.

Just be sure to remind yourself now that DS will be covered up more beacuse of the cooler weather and you'll have to know to check and make sure you did all the harnesses.  You don't want to make a habit of this!!!!!

  • Easy to avoid.  Check the carseat before you go anywhere!

So you did it once.  A bunch of people have done it once and they learned from it.  It doesn't make it any less safe, but they learned.  You seem to be brushing off doing it a second time a little too lightly IMO.

We got into an accident with the boys last weekend and thankfully they were just fine (slept right through it) but they were properly fastened in.  I don't even want to imagine what could have happened if they hadn't been.

It only takes a second to check, or 2 to double check EVERY TIME you put them in the car.  But you can regret not doing it for a lifetime.

  • Maybe put a note on your steering wheel to help you remember to check?
  • Nope. Being properly fastened is a huge deal. I always make sure I check a few times before we go anywhere.

  • No I have not forgotten to do this mainly because I had a friend forget to do this and lost her kid in a car accident....This has haunted me so I am quite the freak about triple checking the seat belt.

ditto. maybe once i could *maybe* understand, but two and three times? you could kill your baby if you were ever in an accident!

  • I have never done this myself.

And I understand that it happens.  Once.

More than once, I don't get it.  I truly don't.  If I did forget I would be damned sure to be double and triple checking anytime after the first time.

  • Nope, can't say I have ever forgotten to buckle my LO in...and if I did, it would never, ever happen again I'd be so upset with myself.  I always remember to buckle myself in, so I do the same for DS.

Also, most of the time he has been put in his carrier in the house, so he goes into the car all buckled in.

Good to hear everyone was okay. I was in an accident while I was PG so I know it can be scary! And no I don't take it lightly. I'm a creature of habit and the first he wasn't harnessed in (we were in someone's yard in and out of the car moving around loading stuff so when we left I just thought DS was harnessed in) the second I was in my mom's car & we were talking to her friend & in a hurry and I put the carseat in the car then she handed me him & I harnessed him in. I don't have to buckle his carseat down in my car so I just flat out forgot to in hers. But in absolutely no way did I take it lightly.

  • we forgot once with my first daughter. we were at my dad's house and she was colicy, and swinging her carseat would settle her down. well she fell asleep so we tucked her blanket around her and then hung out for awhile, then just picked up the carseat and went home.. untucked her and discovered she wasn't buckled in! OOPS!
  • No, this hasn't happened to me. Im sure it was scary and you feel horrible, it was an accident and they happen. BUT this is preventable and it happend twice...in a very short period of time. You need to pay more attention.

Step 1. Baby goes in car seat.

Step 2. You strap baby in.

    Thats it. Really.

    3 times?!

  • I've done it once also. Looks like most people have. It happened because I covered him up and just totally forgot. We always check before we leave now.

I forgot once, but remembered before I got out of the parking lot. Thank God!

  • Even though it shouldn't happen, it does.  It doesn't make you a terrible person.  I've done it only once (which is one to many times for me) with DS.  My father had taken DS out to feed him while I was in a store with DD.  We left the mall and got everyone into the truck and started out of the parking lot.  Thankfully, DD told me that AJ wasn't fully buckled.  So I jumped in the back, buckled him up and we were on our way.  It only takes a quick second to double check.  Make sure that it is part of your routine...diaper bag, blanket, check carseat, etc.

This. When I was in third tri I got so paranoid from reading stories about people forgetting their LO in the car, that there is a note on my dashboard reminding me to check to see if he's in the back. Doing the same to make sure he's snapped in is probably a good idea.

This!  When she goes in the seat we buckle her immediately.

Also, when anybody else besides me or MH buckles her in or put the seat in the base, I always check it!  I don't make a big deal about it, I just double check.  I would rather be safe!
