Anybody else have a screamer?

DD has been shrieking and it's awful. It's not just a little bit of yelling...it's a full out high-pitched shriek. She does it when she's frustrated or angry, but she also does it when she's really excited. We've tried telling her "no" in stern voices, ignoring it, and about a million time outs, but nothing has helped to stop it or at least lessen it to any degree. Anybody else have experience with this or have any ideas of how we can stop it? It's seriously getting out of hand and I don't know what to do...

TIA!

  • DD has been doing this too, but she just does it because she thinks it's fun.  She screams at the top of her lungs and holds it for several seconds, then looks at me and smiles like she's all proud.  I'm hoping it's just a phase.  She did it in the grocery store yesterday, and I got some awful awful looks.

  • DD does this as well. She does it when she's mad or frustrated over something. I think it's just a phase and will be better when she can talk and communicate what she wants.

DH and I will sometimes tell her sternly "no ma'am" or "that's not acceptable." Something along those lines. I haven't done timeout or any type of "punishment" for it because I really think it just stems from frustration. I usually just talk in a low/sweet/nice voice and it helps her calm down.

GL! I know this is frustrating!

  • YES!  my dd will shriek when mad, extremely excited, sad, happy, tired...you name it, she screams.  We've been trying to curb it a little bit b/c right now there are no trips to restaurants in our future :(

  • Yes!  DD went through a month long screaming phase at 11 months.  I would simply say "shhh, softly" in a whispering voice.  She got the hang of it and would "scream" more quietly.  She has just started again, but I think it is due to cutting a molar.
  • OMG i hate this.  my favorite is in the grocery store that makes for some fun shopping.  mine does this when hes really tired, frustrated or when my older son and him are in the car together they feed off each other and the baby gets all nuts over my son not giving him certain things.  I hope this ends soon and the throwing.
