Would anyone NOT recommend the Britax Roundabout?

I think we're going to go with the Britax Roundabout, but I wanted to check to see if anyone dislikes it.  I've only heard good things about it.  Thanks!

Re: Would anyone NOT recommend the Britax Roundabout?

  • I could be completely wrong about this, but I thought I had heard that they can't be used as long for extended rear facing like the Marathons can. I would check the weight limit/height limit for extended rear facing if that's something you think you want to do. The AAP now suggests keeping them rear facing until 2, but you should do your own research and decide for yourself. For what it's worth, Adam is still rear facing and my goal is to keep him that way until the snow/ice season is over. At his 18 month appointment two months ago, he was 33 inches and 28 pounds.

  • We have two Roundabout's in my car and two Marathon's in DH's car.  The only difference is the Marathon's are so much more roomier (sp?)...which is nice for chunky DD2 and tall DD1.   DD1 (2 years old) head is already at the top of the Roundabout.

Britax makes great carseats and they are so easy to use and install!

  • We have a Roundabout in our little Nissan and a Marathon in the Subaru.  We went with the Roundabout b/c I worried a Marathon wouldn't fit in the Nissan & b/c I found it on clearance at Target for $115.  Now I'm concerned that E will pass the rear facing limits too quickly.  I've read that if your child is in the 90th percentile or above that you should go with the Marathon.  We'll see how it goes.  I think E might slow down some once he's walking.  Just wanted to pass that along b/c I know J is a bigger baby too.  I don't know where you're buying from (saw your ? on FB) but wanted to tell you that we bought our Marathon from travelingtikes.com for $199 and free shipping.  There were some issues with shipping so it took a long time to arrive (3-4 wks) but worth the savings to me.

  • Thanks for the input!  Rachel, unless I'm reading something wrong, the Marathon and Roundabout are both only rear facing until 35 lbs.  I, like you, want to keep J rear-facing until age 16 :)

I guess what I need to do is pick a booster seat and see if the Marathon is worth more money since he can stay in it longer.  I like the idea of keeping him in a harness as long as possible.

Thanks Christina for the site rec!  I'll look into it!  And yes, I've been looking at a growth chart to see how big he could be each year if he stayed in the 90th percentile for height/weight.  He did drop at his last appt, but not sure if that was a fluke or the new pattern!

  • I think the difference between the two is more about height, not weight. And the Fisher Price Safe Voyage is exactly the same as a Marathon. Kind of like how a Pontiac Vibe and a Toyota Matrix are the same car with different prices.

I have the Safe Voyage since I wanted the safest seat I could find, without paying for the Britax name. I got mine from albeebaby.com and it's on sale there for $109.99. They did stop making them, so they were made two years ago, but they don't expire for a long time. However, if you plan to use the seat for more than one child, and they might be very spaced out, this would be an issue to consider.

The difference is the height issue and also the forward facing weight limit. Even though the weight limits are both 35 rear-facing, the shell of the Roundabout is shorter, so he could potentially outgrow that sooner if he seems to be on track to be tall or have a long torso. With rear facing, even if they're within the weight limits, they need to have at least 1 inch of room between the top of their heads and the top of the seat shell, so if they're tall or even just have a long torso(which we're realizing for Nick - we stuck Mia in his seat this weekend and they're on the same should strap height!!)they can easily reach that limit before they reach the weight limit.

It also gives a long forward facing limit for once they're turned around - the Roundabout only goes up to 40lbs and the Marathon will go up to 65lbs forward facing. So, for the extra money between the Roundabout and the Marathon, it came down to the issue for us of longer rear facing option and knowing that it was either money spent now or later - if we went with the Roundabout, we'd just need to spend money on a new seat sooner if they hit the limits vs. having the Marathon that'll last until they graduate from high schoo;)

Then we got the FP Safe Voyage for less than both and I was super super happy!

rlthomas - thank you so so so much for mentioning the FP on albee again!!! It's what Mia has and I wanted to get one for Nick and they weren't listed when I looked again. Now that they're available, I'm definitely getting one for Nick!

  • Now I understand!  We'll probably be going with the Marathon then since he can be harnessed in longer.  Thanks!!
