Georgia Babies

Prayers and anyone else have this issue?

Last week was rough.  I went for my 20 week ultrasound and we didn't get great news.  There is fluid on the baby's brain.  They sent us straight over to the hospital to get a better ultrasound/specialist (this is Northside Forsyth hopsital) too see what was going on.  Basically normal fluid is 1 or below.  We are at 1.02.  Very close.  The fluid could be caused from genetic disorder or viral.  I was very sick a month ago and he said the virus could of entered my placenta and gotten to the baby.  But the only way we could know what is going on is by amniocentesis.  The dr stated I had 1 in 500 chance to have a miscarriage.  That numbered scared me.  Also he asked all questions about my down syndrome test and I told him I was 1/1100 (good number).  No signs of downs.  He said now with the fluid that I have gone up to 1% out of 100.  Still not enough to make me worry too much about having downs. All measurements of the spine, limbs, head, neck and organs were excellent. Showing no sign of deformity.  Weight was 12 oz which is good.

So basically we have made the decision to sit and wait until our next appt Nov 10th.  We will not abort.  If there is more fluid on the babies brain then he will refer us to a brain surgeon because when the baby is born it will have a shunt put in it's head to drain the fluid out.

I am trying to stay so positive about this since I have 3 more weeks until my next appt.  There are so many positive things out of the ultrasound with that 1 negative.  I was seeing if anyone else has gone through this.  I have friends that have done amnio because their down's numbers came back very high.  It is just something I don't want to risk due to my age (36) and what if nothing is wrong and I lose this child.

Oh and I forgot to say that my placenta hasn't moved.  That was not a big concern this appt since I am already having a c section and the fluid took over the focus.  So I will talk about it more next appt and see if it has moved any.

But with all these ultrasounds we did find out the sex.  My husband was putting on the pressure big this time since we didn't find out with Nate.  So we are on the blue team! Nate will have a little brother to play with.  So cool!!!

  • oh and please don't say anything on FB because we haven't told the whole family about this issue and the sex yet.  We are waiting for our next appt.

  • Big prayers headed your way.  You are right, there were so many positive things to focus on and just this 1 negative thing and like you said 1.02 is not that far off the "normal" range.  I really hope that everything will be perfectly normal at your next appointment.  And I pray for peace for you until then.  And yay for team blue!!!

  • I am so sorry for the added stress.  I had a friend who went through the same thing and when she went back all was well and normal. Baby was fine.  Actually this also happened to someone else I know from another board and her baby was fine also.

Take it day by day and try not to get stuck in the what if worse scenario case as the odds are still greatly in your favor all will be well.  Will keep you in my prayers that time flies by and you get great news at your next ultrasound.

  • This happened to our best man's wife with their first son.   They were very concerned and did the amnio and nothing was wrong.

I sending you T&P that  everything turns out ok.   Congrats on finding out its a boy!

  • Will say prayers that everything works out perfectly for you guys. It's so hard going through all the worry, but I don't blame you about not wanting to do amnio. I would probably feel the same way in your situation. I hope the next few weeks go by fast for you

  • Kim, I know we've talked already, but remember that I am here if you need someone to lean on.  You and Brad are in our thoughts every day.  I'm hoping we'll get to see you one day this week so I can give you a big hug in person!
  • I am so sorry you are going through this! You are all in my thoughts and prayers! I did not go through this situation, but I am also 36 and for other reasons, I did choose to have an amnio at 17 weeks. The peace of mind that the results brought were worth the risk to me. I am a need to know person if something is wrong etc.  The test itself was less painful than a regular blood test.

I hope the next 3 weeks fly by for you and everything turns out fine. Congrats on a baby brother for Nate! So exciting!

And yay for team blue!  Not only did I win a bet with Peter for once in my life but I've also told Noah that his best friend will be arriving in a few months. :-)

  • Will be thinking about you and hoping the next few weeks go quickly!!  Congrats on team blue :)

  • {{{Hugs}}} we didnt' have the same issue, but our MSAFP came back at 2.54 and the norm is below 2.5 so I know what it's like to feel borderline. They wanted us to do an amnio as well, at 17 weeks. I refused, just like you. We had TONS of ultrasounds...every 4 weeks until 30 weeks, then weekly until birth. They NEVER found a reason for it being elevated (although I think the jaundice may be related if it's a liver thing). But anyway, I've sort of been in your shoes. It's hard, and scary, but you have to do what's right for your child, and for you that is giving him the best chance and making it into your arms. GL and you'll all be in my prayers....YAY for team blue!!!

  • T&P are heading your way. ?I don't know anything about the issue but I understand how you must be feeling! ?You sound like you have a very positive attitude and that is great:) ?And yay for team blue!! ?Please keep us posted!!
  • I didn't have the same exact issue but had a similar situation and refused the amnio as well. Our thoughts were that we were going to love and adore our baby regardless and knowing wouldn't change that, it'd just add extra stress. I'll be thinking of you guys. Keep us updated!

  • Hang in there!!  My niece had fluid on her brain and it resolved itself...she turned out totally healthy.

    sending prayers your way.

  • My younger sister was born has hydrocephalis (sp?), which I believe is the same thing as water on the brain. She had a shunt installed and went through quite a bit of physical therapy when she was younger to help with her motor skills, etc. She's 23 now, and the shunt/water on the brain hasn't affected her life in years and years.
  • Oh Kim, I can only imagine how stressful this might be, but I think you made the right decision to sit tight. I will definitely say a prayer for you and your family that this is nothing, and your baby is perfectly healthy.  Yay for another boy, that is great news that Nate will have a little brother so close in age.  I hope the next 3 weeks go by quickly and you get some good news at your next appt! All the best to you!
  • Just wanted to send hugs and prayers your way.

  • I'll be praying for you and your little guy. Fingers crossed for good news at the next visit!! {{{{{hugs}}}}}}}

  • First, Yay for another little boy! Nate will love having a brother I'm sure.

Second, I don't have personal experience with your issue but A good friend of mine did. The first US showed fluid and then they had another US a few weeks later and it has resolved on its own. I don't remember exactly the amount of time between the two US though. Baby was born normal and healthy and has developed right on schedule since then. Good luck with waiting and at your next appointment!
