I Need Some Assistance...Breastpumps/Bottles

Ok ladies...this one might be specialized for previous moms....

I am trying to figure out what kind of brestpump to get/register for. Currently I have a playtex one but my friend just told me that Medela is like "the best" out there. Any suggestions or other recommendations? Also I was thinking the automatic would be the easiest, does anyone recommend the manual pumps instead.

and leading into that...DH and I were in target the other day trying to figure out bottles...anyone like a certian type?

I've also heard the Medela is the best pump to get. My friend told me to get the bottles that go with the pump, to make bottle feeding easier.

But, we also registered for the BPA free Dr. Browns bottles. They cut down on gas and colic.

With DD I used my Medela pump and I loved it. It worked great. I wouldn't get a manual one unless you need to pump while away and know you won't have anyplace to plug it into. We also used Dr. Brown's bottles and while they are a pain to clean since they have so many parts they greatly reduced my DD gas. But some babies don't like certain nipples/bottles so maybe buy two or three different bottles and see which one they take too.

On the manual vs. automatic... it really depends on how often you're planning on pumping. If it is just an occassional bottle so you can go out for a day/evening... I'd go with the manual but if you're planning on EP-ing or you're going back to work and will be pumping multiple times a day, I'd go with a "double" automatic. I used to pump for 20 minues and there is no way my hand would last that long with a manual pump!

I used the Medela Pump in Style with #1 and didn't have any issues with it but I've heard the Pump In Style Advance (PISA) is much better.

Before you buy/register for one, check your insurance company. I just found out last week that my insurance company will completely pay for one. Just a thought, it was exciting news for me, because I was planning on paying over $300 for one.

Yeah one of the bumpies here made a post about it last week. So I decided to call and just check, I figured it couldn't hurt anything. I was bragging about a stinking breastpump that whole night, everyone probably thought i was crazy. But you can thank the bumpy that posted last week, her name is "Capitol"...something or another, I have a bad memory

Ameda pumps are just as good (if not better according to some). I worked FT with DS and pumped until he was one (sometimes as much as 5 times per day). I used the Ameda Purely Yours. I quit work after that but will use it at home with the next one. It's a piston style pump which from a mechanical perspective is better than the membrane style of the medela. Piston style pumps are better "workhorses". Also, milk or condensation cannot in any way get into the tubing and motor of the Ameda. It can with the Medela PIS or PISA.

Medelas are very good pumps, but Amedas can definitely give them a run for their money... literally. They are a good bit cheaper.

I'm going to check into the insurance thing. If I can't get a free or drastically reduced cost pump, I'm just going to buy the Lansinoh manual pump. It's about $30 and has great reviews. I'm not going back to work so I will only need it occasionally. DH and I take longer car trips pretty often, so I also thought the manual pump would be handy for using in the car.

As for bottles, I've done a little research and Dr. Brown's is highly recommended. They have a wider style bottle that moms say mimic breastfeeding better than normal bottles. So, I registered for some of those but I might try a couple other brands.

I'm a bottle feed mom, so I'm not much help with the breastpump. I can tell you that the platex nurser system are excellent bottles. The nipples are like real nipples, look and shape of them. My DD whom is 8yrs old now, had no gas, colic or any other issues with it. Will be using this again for this baby.

After doing some research we are going with an Ameda. It was between than an a Medala.
