Do you need a pump if......

Do you think I'll need a breast pump if Im planning on staying home for 6+ months??

I was talking to my mom today and she acted confused when I said I was researching them. She thinks you really dont need one if you're staying home.

She said she just threw a blanket over and nursed me whenever I was hungry but I know there will be instances when I just wont be able to.

 Thoughts??

  • I still would.  I want h to have that bonding experience by being able to feed  the baby.  Plus, aren't you going to have to go out at times without the baby?

  • I have a pump and I am a SAHM. DH and I are planning on keeping our Friday night date nights, so pumping will allow someone else to feed him because I am not buying formula (unless absolutely necessary)!
  • Yes, even though the child won't be in day care, there will still be instances where you will need or want a babysitter.

  • if you and dh ever want to go out to dinner or a movie or if your mom ever wants to babysit for you, the I would get one. hand expressing just isnt that easy. I just had a manual pump for my first son and it worked jsut fine for the things that I needed it for, like whent I wanted to go out or when I got engorged and needed to get more out than ds would take in at a time. I used the Avent manual one.
  • I would want one just so you could leave the baby at some time during that 6 months.(unless you plan to give formula)  You may just need a less "fancy" cheaper one though.
  • Definitely get a pump!

There's times when you'll want to (or need to) be away from your baby even staying at home.

I'm a full-time SAHM and use my pump everyday.  Some days I just want a break and DH will watch Owen while I go shopping.  DH will feed him a pumped bottle if he gets hungry while I'm away.  We go on date nights (like this weekend my mom will watch Owen while we go see a movie).  I like the occassionaly drink too.  So I use my pumped milk to feed Owen afterwards.

We take Owen with us almost everywhere (like this morning I ran a 5k and fed him before the start of the race), but there's times it's just nice to have a break  :)

  • I would get one. There are so many reasons it's nice to have a good freezer supply, even as a SAHM. You don't need a fancy Pump In Style, but definitely get an electric one.
  • I plan on staying home and I am getting a pump. I definitely want my H to be able feed the baby, and I also want to be able to go somewhere and leave him with the ILs. I did not have one with my first and there were times I felt like I was attached by the boob, and wished I had a different alternative. And lastly but not leastly, I want to be able to drink a few every so often. Iwant to be able to pump and dump, and have reserves for the baby also.
    Effing crazy people.
  • I stayed home with DD for the first 5 1/2 months.  I used it a lot.  She got thrush really bad and gave it to me! I couldn't nurse after the first 2 months...So I had to pump.  Also...there were times when my parents were watching her and I gave them breast milk in bottles for her.  ALSO...she was jaundice and I had to supplement with formula for the first month, So I had to pump when I gave her a bottle to keep my milk coming! I would DEFINITELY get one...you just never know!

  • I'm taking 5 months off work and plan to get one (as long as bf-ing works out). I want others to be able to feed our baby if they want (dh, friends, parents), and it will give me more freedom! I also have friends who've tried to switch their 5, 6 month olds to bottle and found it hard. Those who started the bottle earlier seemed to have an easier time. I have no idea if this is typical, just what my friends have experienced. GL!

  • I would definitely get one.  I planned to breastfeed but DD had major latching issues so I ended up pumping from day 1 for 3 months.

It's also helpful to have a stash handy in case you ever won't be home during a feeding.

  • I'm a SAHM and I can't imagine not having a pump.

When my milk was slow to come in, my pedi recommended pumping after every feeding to get my supply up. It was a pain but really, really helped and I never had supply issues after that.

Also, there were times in the first few weeks that my nipples were so sore or raw from nursing that I just plain needed a break, and so (on the advice of my LC) I would pump instead of BFing maybe once a day.

All that pumping helped me build up a freezer stash for when we introduced the bottle. Pumping was also useful when we started DD on solids, so I could mix BM with her rice cereal and first foods.

  • I am a SAHM and I definitely needed a pump. In the beginning it was to help relieve some engorgement and then build supply for when I was not around to feed DS. Just because you SAH doesn't necessarily mean you will never need to give him/her a bottle
  • You might still need a pump.

I am planning on pumping because DH wants to be able to feed him too. He was really bummed when I said I wanted to try to EBF the baby. I was surprised but it's his kid too...if he wants to feed him I am certainly willing to pump so that he still is getting breast milk.
