Can we talk car seats?

I am starting to think about what will be best for us. What did you get in terms of Infant only vs. convertible.

I can see benefits to both but would like feedback from those that are actually using the systems.

I find that it is extremely difficult to plan for baby because you have no idea what you are doing. Half the time it is a crap shoot. How the heck am I supposed to know what to get if I have never had a kid before and to try and account for all of those "maybe" moments.

We looked at Bumblerides last night and we still like them but then she showed us the City line with the one hand closure. I don't know if I will have to close the stroller with one hand while holding the baby with the other!

Re: Can we talk car seats?

  • I don't think I know very many people that did the convertible only seat around here for winter babies.  A few pros for the infant seat that I can think of off the top of my head are:

-since infants sleep so much you wouldn't need to wake the baby when you are going place to place or going home.  Sometimes I appreciated a car ride induced nap once we got home because she was really tough to get to sleep on her back in the crib.

-can bundle them up in the house so the seat itself is warm rather than car tempurature

-you can pop it into your stroller to get out of the house

I have a one hand fold stroller but I wouldn't say its essential.  I think the important thing is that a stroller has an easy fold- 2 hands or not.  I've used the one hand fold at a picnic when we were packing up the car but not actually leaving a picnic.

  • i agree with orange.  it was really easy to take ethan to the grocery store and keep him in the car seat.  Plus we had a saran wrap type of cover so I kept it zipped up and noone could look in and see him.  I did use the sling a couple times in the store but it's so much easier in the car seat. plus we are still using hte infant seat. I am hoping ot make it throught the winter before converting to the convertable car seat
  • When I first got pg I was pretty set on getting only the convertible seat.. but I got talked out of it. and I'm glad I did.. Even now that Eve is getting heavy, i still usually lug her carseat in places because its easier than buckling her in and out of the seat in the car.. We plan to use the infant seat til she is 1 at least..

  • The infant seat was essential in the beginning for the reasons Orange mentioned. It was so great to get him set up in the house, then just go. I have the Graco Quattro Tour system with the one-hand close. I put him in the car first, then fold up the stroller. It was quick and easy, so I didn't have to spend too much time getting in the car while Ian was by himself inside the car.
  • I am hoping to make it through the winter with the infant seat, even if I end up with monkey arms from carrying the load!

I have the Chicco.....it has easy one handed close.

  • I obviously dont have "experience" but I reg. for an infant seat and the sna and go

  • Definitely need the infant seat.  In the begining they are so little that it is hard to keep taking them in and out of seats so the infant seat is so much easier because you can keep them right in it.  Another point not made, car seats  expire after 5 yrs.  Yet the law keeps kids in car seats for 7 years.  So even if you get a seat that is meant to last the span, it will expire 2 yrs before they are out of it.
