Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your little one is congested do you still send to daycare?

DD does not have a fever, but she's drooling a LOT (cutting some more teeth) and has a horrible runny nose and is congested.  Other than that and a little sleepy, she's okay.

With the congestion (sounds so rough in her lungs) would you feel comfortable sending her to daycare?  I know that kids who are sick should stay home, but not sure if she's really "sick" enough not to attend.

(FYI I started a new job so I'd hate to call in if I can help it, but possibly DH could take the day off to spend time with her.)

Re: If your little one is congested do you still send to daycare?

  • I work in a childcare center and I can tell you how we feel as teachers.  If they have a cough its not big deal-even if it sounds horrible.  If it's to the point where its keeping them awake and they seem very uncomfortable then we really wish they would stay home until they can at least sleep through the coughing.  Teachers should be cleaning all through the day so the spread of germs is limited.

  • Are you planning on taking her to the doctor for the chest congestion?  If she sounds wheezy and is having trouble catching her breath, I would take her into the pedi and keep her home from daycare.

If you think she just has a bad cold and she is otherwise acting ok, I might take her in if you are concerned about work.  But, if possible, it would be nice for her to get one day at home to recooperate a bit.

  • DS goes to a small in home daycare, its just him and another little girl two months younger. He generally still goes to daycare unless he is really sick. I've stayed home with him a few times and so has DH, but its been when he's been running a fever and completely miserable. If he's a little stuffy or has a bit of a runny nose, he still goes to daycare. If we were to stay home every single time DS had a stuffy or runny nose, we'd lose our jobs. I know especially in center daycares they have to be fever free for 24 hours.

Also, you mentioned that your DD is teething - the drooling and runny nose could be symptoms of that.

Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • I would unless they have a fever or the mucus is coming out green.  If they seem to be acting fine I would go ahead and send them.
  • She does sound very wheezy but I hate to be "that mom" that brings their child in for every little thing....augh decisions decisions.

DD just went to bed but I hear her so I'm off to Walgreen's (DH's at home) to buy some Vicks and that Vicks room thingie.

  • JMO - if she is wheezy, I would take her in.  Has she ever had any breathing problems before where she needed nebulizer treatments?  The reason I ask is because DS had RSV last year and our pedi told me 2 weeks ago that I need to bring him in ASAP if he ever has those symptoms again - wheezing, hard time catching his breath, etc.

    I hope she feels better!!

  • I tend to base it on how he sleeps. If he's sick enough that he doesn't sleep well or wakes up multiple times per night then I keep him home. If he's congested during the day but manages to STTN just fine, I send him. It helps me decide to what "degree" he's sick and also I know if he doesn't sleep well he's going to be miserable the next day.

  • No fever and acting normal, then yes.  Last February DS was wheezy and congested for a month.  We must have taken him to the pedi 5 times in that month and there was just nothing we could do but wait it out (other than the usual, nasal drops, humidifier, etc.).  He could not have stayed home for a month due to congestion!
