Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you've given LO motrin before....need advice

So I had the worst night yet I think with DS being sick--I have NO idea what is wrong--we'll see the pedi tomorrow.  But I decided Tylenol wasn't kicking his fever and gave him motrin finally today at 11:15am.  I know it lasts 8 hrs or so---although appears his fever is back pretty high again (haven't taken it yet--but can feel his head).

My question is that I think the motrin actually made him WIRED...he has not slept all day long--and slept like crap all night.  He's been in a semi-good mood--but he needs his sleep.  I'm worried if I do motrin again he might continue to act this way all night.  I was trying to decide on whether to go back to Tylenol.

What has been your experience?

If I do go back to the Tylenol--do I have to wait a certain amount of time (like 8 hrs) since his dose of Motrin????

  • I haven't heard of Motrin making anyone kids I know wired, but its certainly possible.

My pedi says to rotate Tylenol then Motrin every four hours for a fever.  So maybe give Tylenol next time, when its been 4 hours from the last dose of Motrin.  And maybe that'll help?

My DD didn't nap more than 20 minutes yesterday.  Maybe its in the air :)   (She's doing some hardcore teething... ow)

  • We've used Motrin since 6 months it works better for DS than Tylenol.  YOU can however use both, so if his fever is back you can give him a dose of Tylenol since they work in different ways.  When DS had his double ear infection we were told to use one then 4 hours later use the other.

DS doesn't get wired off either.

  • I've noticed that if we give Motrin during the day, it does seem to make her wired. If we give it in the middle of the night when she wakes, it doesn't seem to do that for some reason. On bad teething nights I'll do Tylenol right at bedtime and then Motrin if she wakes up after the Tylenol wears off.

  • OK--so sounds like giving tylenol 4 hours after motrin is ok then??

  • When ds is sick and I give him Motrin, once his fever is gone, he starts to act almost like he normally does.  Alos, are you dosing by weight?  I know ds is right at the end of the weight range so I give him b/w the 2 doses.  Also, I read on Dr. Sears website and our pedi told us that the manufacturer underdoses Motrin, not sure why.  So if it's not working call your pedi and ask about the right dose.  I know ours has a better chart than what the meds come with.  And I believe it was the same or similar chart as Dr. Sears had.
