3rd Trimester

Has anyone here actually had H1N1?

If so, what was your experience like being pregnant with the swine flu? ?I know it was horrible but details please.

Re: Has anyone here actually had H1N1?

  • I don't "officially" know if I did, DH, DS and I all got really, really sick back in August. My dr said it was probably H1N1, given our symptoms and b/c there was nothing else circulating around that time other than the virus.

I couldn't keep anything down (or in- it was coming out both ends) for almost 36 hours, and had to go to the hospital for 3 bags of fluids b/c I was so dehydrated. Why they didn't test me at the hospital, I have no idea. I was too sick to ask. They gave me anti-nausea meds, and that's what finally helped me get to feeling a little better (though those things knock you out!). It was still almost 2 full weeks before I felt 100% though. I'd never been so sick in my whole life.

  • I was diagnosed with influenza A, they couldn't specifically test for H1N1.  But my OB said it was most likely that, something like 97% of flu cases in my area are currently swine flu.

They also said that my symptoms were pretty much spot on for it: sore throat, cough, fever, body aches.  And it wasn't that bad honestly.  The last two times I've had the flu, it was to the point where I couldn't get out of bed and was totally miserable.  This was actually very mild, which they said was what they had been hearing too.

Did they do anything for you? I mean is there really anything they can do/give you to manage your symptoms? I think I might have the flu and keep debating on calling the Dr or going to the ER. I just feel like such crap I just broke down crying because I feel like I can't take it anymore. But since it's a virus I'm not sure what they can really do for me anyway.

  • All they can really do is give you Tylenol and keep you hydrated, which is the most important thing.  I would hunker down in bed for a couple of days with plenty of h2o/fluids, the remote and some good books.  Get lots of rest...hope you feel better soon!

  • If you think you have the flu don't hesitate, call your doctor and they will most likely prescribe you anti-viral medication.  If you have trouble breathing and have trouble getting out of bed, you should go to the ER.  But you should definitely call your doctor.

I have been sick for the past 2 weeks.  It started like a cold (or so I thought), but then did not go away.  I then got flu-like symptoms (fever, aches and chills, etc.)  I called and got some anit-viral meds.  After about 15 days of this I'm starting to feel better.  My doctor said that pregnant women in the third trimester are the most vulnerable for the flu.  So I would call asap.

Oh wow, good to know.  I just started with cold symptoms on Friday.  I don't have a fever or aches, just the sore throat, sinus, and my asthma is bothering me a little.

I took Tamiflu.  Here was the timeline of my flu:

Friday - flew to MI for baby shower, flew back Sunday

Tuesday - not quite feeling right, ended up leaving work at lunchtime

Wednesday - fever, stayed home, decided I would call the dr. if not gone by the next day

Thursday - higher fever, OB told me to go to urgent care, sat there for 3 hours, flu test came back positive, prescribed Tamiflu which I started taking immediately

I started feeling better the next day, although that's when my thermometer decided to die so I couldn't monitor my temp.  I was out of the house on Sunday and back to work on Monday.  I don't know if the Tamiflu itself was responsible for the quickness of my recovery or if my flu was just that mild.  I know everyone is jumping to get Tamiflu if they're feeling sick or were exposed to someone sick but keep in mind it's a Class C drug.  I don't know if I would have wanted to take it if I hadn't known for sure that I had the flu.  There's risks and benefits to be weighed out in my opinion.

    Sorry so long!
