Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction- anyone have it?

The symptoms are below and they are exactly what i feel like. Anyone have it?  I have never heard of it till now.

Any activity that involves lifting one leg at a time or parting the legs tends to be particularly painful. Lifting the leg to put on clothes, getting out of a car, bending over, sitting down or getting up, walking up stairs, standing on one leg, lifting heavy objects, and walking in general tend to be difficult at times. Many women report that moving or turning over in bed is  especially excruciating.  One woman wrote, "There were days that I didn't think I was going to be able to get out of bed and actually had to roll out of bed and onto the floor to be able to do so!" [See her story below.]

Many movements become difficult when the pubic symphysis area is affected.  Although the greatest pain is associated with movements of lifting one leg or parting the legs, some women experience a 'freezing', where they get up out of bed and find it hard to get their bodies moving right away--the hip bone seems stuck in place and won't move at first.  Or they describe having to wait for it to 'pop into place' before being able to walk.  The range of hip movement is usually affected, and abduction of the hips especially painful.

  • Had it...saw a physical therapist who repositioned my bones back into place and gave me some stuff to do at home...I have been "cured" ever since!  My pelvis was as if someone just took it and twisted all my bones out of place.

  • It's normal to have pubic pain, but from what my doctor's told me, the "normal" pubic pain isn't constant - it will happen when you're rolling over, lifting your legs, etc.  Where with SPD you're in pain constantly.

This. and it also comes and goes depending on how much you have been on your feet.

I had it particularly bad last weekend, because we went to the mall both friday and saturday, by saturday evening I was dying, I couldn't even lift my legs to get into bed without almost crying. I talked to my DR on my apt on Monday and he said its completely normal. The longer you are on your feet the further along you get, the more pain you will be in because gravity is putting all the pressure of your LO and everything LO related right on your pubic bone.

once I started taking it easy and not being on my feet so much it went away. I do have the occasional pain still but nothing like it was last saturday.

  • It is also more common in pregnant women who have previously delivered a large baby (DS was 9lbs 1oz) and those who are pregnant again within 18 months of last pregnancy (me, again).  Id see a therapist, especially if you can find one that specializes in pregnant women.  I bypassed our doctor because I was annoyed with him saying it was a nerve.  It is totally possible for this pain associated with SPD to disappear...I'm proof.

  • I've had those symptoms in the past few weeks, but a trip to my chiropractor has cleared them up.

It's usually my pelvis or sacrum that's out of alignment a little. I recommend a chiropractor visit if you're in a lot of pain. I'm anxiously awaiting mine at 8:30 in the morning!

  • Both my OB's have blown this off in both of my pregnancies.  I got it at 15 weeks with DS #1 and at 25 weeks with this pregnancy, only not as severe as the first.

Given my high risk status for other stuff, maybe they just think this is the least of my problems?  But holy goodness....it freaking sucks.  I have found an exercise ball seems to alleviate some of the pain.  Honestly, though, with DS #1, it was GONE within a day of delivery.  I'm banking on the same thing this time around!

  • How did you bring this up to your OB?  I am high risk because of PTL and on bedrest since 23 weeks so I go see mine every week.  I brought this up last week and he brushed it off as normal pregnancy pains.  I can't even roll over in bed without crying the pain is SO INTENSE.  I'm going to bring it up to him tomorrow.  If he brushes it off again, should I just bypass him and make an appt with a chiropractor?

Also, since I'm at risk for delivering early, could the baby have moved down and that is what is causing the pain?  It is just AWFUL!
