S/O Hospital bills...

how much is the delivery of the babies (previous moms: how much did you have to pay after insurance)? I know it's different if you have a c/s, but I'm just curious.  DH is laidoff, and I've done a terrific job of paying off some debts we had (I'm tooting my own horn on this one b/c it was a ***).  I'm just wondering how much we'll owe the hospital after insurance does their thing. TIA

Re: S/O Hospital bills...

  • my hospital copay is 500.00

  • Doesn't it depend on your insurance? My copay is $500 but I heard of some being as high as 20% of the entire bill. I would call your insurance company and find out how much will it be.

  • I haven't had any babies yet but I know that I'm only responsible for the $100 inpatient hospital stay co-payment. I have really great insurance. Maternity is covered 100%.
  • oh, and that is the same price c/s or vaginal. It's in patient hospitlization copay
  • I will pay $250. If you have insurance, you should be able to ask- I've seen a lot of different amounts on these boards, from $100 up.

Ok, so that's what I thought about our's too.  Then a lady at work said to be prepared to pay out the butt.  I was really confused.

  • My insurance has a $500 deducible, 80/20 after that, and $2k out of pocket max.

I had my baby in Sept so all my expenses were incurred in 2009 calendar year.

My hospital bill was $1722.  We got a 15% discount for prepaying *paid the estimated portion before we left* .  This included DS's circ...didn't see if you are having a boy or girl

I had a vag delivery...I can't believe how many people on here have such awesome insurance...I'm jealous, I would say my insurance is pretty average.

  • It depends on your insurance, of course, but if this helps, here's what mine is. I have 80/20, which means insurance pays 80% and I pay 20%. However, my particular plan has an out of pocket annual maximum of $1500.00. So far, I've paid over $500 for the %20 of everything such as first trimester screening, quad screen, sonograms, etc, so when it comes time to deliver, the most we'll have to pay out of pocket will be $1000 or less, which my insurance co said that you can pay over time with no interest, basically as much as you want as long as you're making some payment every month.

I know there's a zillion different plans out there, but maybe there's some commonality and this can give you some idea. It took me several calls to my company to completely wrap my head around how it all works and grasp it, so good luck to you!

  • My hospital bill will actually be completely covered by my insurance BUT since my DH started a new job we had to apply for Cobra and are now paying about $250 extra each month! Thought it was going to be way more so I can live with that! Luckily it's just until our new insurance kicks in!

Don't forget your baby has the same deductible and out of pocket max as you....so you will get billed under both names...Mine was met obviously but then the bills started coming under his name for his expenses...which is why I paid more, but not too much more, than my personal out of pocket max.

  • I teach and have insurance through the school. After all was said and done, I still owed $1,100 dollars because adding LO changed my plan to a family plan so I had to make up the difference on the deductible. I had a c-section too, so that added more.
  •

Crap! So you mean when the baby's born she'll be her own insurance entity and my personal out of pocket max won't be the same? Does it automatically make us a family plan (which I think has an out of pocket max of 2,500)? lol I thought I had it all figured out...

  • When I delivered #1, we were supposted to just have a copay of 250.00 but we actually never got a bill!! I'm expecting them to charge us twice for this baby...

I did see our hospital bill, it was almost 20k and we were there less than 30 hours. No pain meds, no nursery/nicu stay, nothing.  They actually billed 36 dollars for 2 extra strength tylenol! I'm so glad I didn't have a 20% copay for something silly like that.

We actually lucked out; our insurance is changing from an HMO (where almost everything is covered) to a PPO starting in January and we'll have a 20% copay for everything on top of a 5000 family deductible! Had we waited just 2 more months to get pregnant again we'd be paying out the wazoo!

The best thing you can do is at least contact your insurance and find out more about your plan.  It may be that you only have a copay. Otherwise you're probably looking at some kind of percentage that you'll owe.  Good thing about hospitals is that you have options as to how you will pay the amount back to them; you can always work out a payment plan.

  • for us it was the deductible for an inpt stay--I think it was $250.  My insurance also charges 10 office visit copays ($200) once the baby comes/I don't pay each time I go to the OB and if it's less than 10 visits total then I pay less.  I had a csect w/DD but that didn't seem to figure into it.  I NEVER received a bill in DD's name.

This is how my insurance works too!  I wish I had the great insurance everyone else seems to have around here.  I am so jealous!

  • Nothing! We pay $15 once and that's it. I paid it back in April when I got my BFP.

Do you have any insurance? Was DH covering you guys? I hope you have a cobra policy.

Without insurance you could be looking at anything between $5K - $20K

  • I will be paying $500 plus 30% of the entire bill, plus up to 2,000 deductible for the LO. ITS going to be a shiitload, I am still paying off an ER bill from earlier this year. We will just have to make monthly payments. I really think about going into L&D because each visit cost me about 600.
