Dry scalp/skin or cradle cap

Is there a difference? DD has really dry skin all over her body but the Aveeno cream has worked wonders. Now her head is really flaky looking. I though cradle cap happened shortly after birth, but am I wrong? Also, what do you do to help it look better? One part of her head is starting to look like scab is developing from being so flaky.

Re: Dry scalp/skin or cradle cap

  • i think it can last for awhile. my LO's cradle cap appeared at 3-4 weeks. it's gotten better, but his scalp is still dry sometimes.

  • Everytime I bath, I scrub my LO's scalp with a soft brush and baby shampoo. I haven't had a problem with cradle cap at all.
  • I just read that CC is only an aesthetic issue when on the head.  But if you really are bothered by it you can rub petroleum jelly or mineral oil and then do a thorough shampoo.  If the flaking gets heavy and is brownish patches or yellow crustiness you may need a special shampoo.  You can also try to prevent this by keeping the head from sweating too much.  So if baby doesn't need a hat don't put one on them.  The only time to be concerned is when it spreads to the face, neck, or butt.

  • I mix baby oil in with my shampoo. This has helped clear up his dry scalp.

  • My LO just got CC at 4 weeks, but my 4 month old nephew has it as well.  Doctor said to use head and shoulders twice a week and rub it around the scalp with a soft toothbrush or hair brush.  We have only done it once so far and it is already helping.  GL!
  • My pedi recommended Eucerin Body wash oil for my little man's cc.  I put a little on his brush and softly scrub the cc and then wash it  out with the Aveeno body and hair wash.  It has worked wonders!
  • The nurses at the hosp said that when LO is in the bath, run a fine tooth comb (the finer side of a normal baby comb) thru the hair while it's wet and has shampoo/soap on it. Something about combing through the shampoo/soap and wetness helps to loosen up any potential flaking spots and gets rid of them. So far, this has worked for us and we do it at every bath.

  • DD had CC and it spread to her face!  Pedi recommended putting olive oil on her head to soften it for about an hour, then rinse it completely off...PITA, you have to rinse it out forever.  Then, use dandruff shampoo (pantene has a nice smelling one) to wash her hair, you can also use the baby brush to scrub/lather her hair.  I  use the olive oil treatment once a week and pantene every time she bathes.  The first time I used it-half of the CC came out!  If it spreads to her face, you can use Cetaphil cream during the day and Aquaphor ointment at night to treat it.  I use both  and it has completely cleared up!  Good luck, by the way your DD is adorable!
