3rd Trimester

Any suggestions on what piece of baby gear might work best?

Dh is a small business owner and works at his store everyday from 9:30am to 3pm by himself.  It won't happen often but on occasion he will have to watch the baby for a little while.  We have thought of 2 ways to manage this.

#1 he can put the baby in the back room with a baby monitor, but there is a lot of equipment in the back that makes a lot of noise.  I still think it will work, but DH isn't so sure.  But if he does this we can fit a PNP back there.

#2 he can keep the baby behind the counter with him.  The issue with this is that he has very limited space back there.  A regular sized PNP will not fit.  We thought a travel swing might be nice.  We could look for one on clearance or used, and he could keep it folded up in the back when he doesn't need it.

Even though I think putting him in the back room will work I do prefer him being out with DH.  (Mainly because the back room, while not far from the counter, does not have a lock.)  But am stuck on exactly how to do this.  Any thoughts on things to look into?  The key words are small, transportable and easily stored.

TIA

  • I am going to vote for a third option - a sling or baby carrier.

  • DH & I own our own business & I plan on bringing our baby in with me. I have just enough room for our PNP behind the front/counter desk where I sit. I plan on keeping here there with me. Honestly, I think a PNP is your best option -- maybe keep looking for a smaller sized one that might fit (ive seen pretty small ones). I plan on using the PNP or having her on me (with moby wrap or bjorn).
  • PNP...What if your baby doesn't like the swing? Or what about when he/she is older and wants a little room to move around? I think the PNP is best. If it's your own business, can you put a lock on the door to put your mind at ease?
  • Can he get an ergo and wear the baby?

  • I vote for keeping baby with daddy. PPs suggestions sound good.

  • Try the Graco Travel Lite - it's a smaller version of the traditional PNP

  • We have a bassinet which is much smaller than the pack n play not as easy to transport but it would probably work.
  • There are mini-cribs that are smaller than regular PNPs. The are sometimes called travel cribs.
  • He does have a Baby Bjorn but that won't work all the time.  At his store he serves hand scooped ice cream (among other things) so having a baby strapped to you all the time might not be a good thing.  Plus what if he doesn't like to sleep in a sling.

The points about him not liking the swing are well taken.  I had discussed that with DH and we aren't planning on getting anything at all until he is at least a few weeks old.  By then we'll have a better idea of what he likes.  But I'm looking for alternatives to look into now, while I have the time to research. =0)

The smaller PNP is a great idea.  I actually think I've seen some at BRU and you have reminded me of them.  I'll have to take some measurements to see what will fit.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Just have him wear baby. Leaving baby unattended in the back, even with a monitor, doesn't sit well with me whatsoever.

  • If you have a Graco Snugride infant seat, how about something like this? LINK

The carseat just hooks right on... it's portable and fold up nicely.

  • If your concern about the noise in the back room is just that the monitor won't alert him to baby waking, you could get a video monitor. I have heard that the Summer video monitor is awesome.

If it's just too noisy for baby to sleep, I would go with the small/travel P&P.
