Germs on public play areas....

How neorotic are you?  I let DS play on the public soft play area at the mall and we might take him to a different one on his b-day at an indoor play center.  I do worry a tiny bit but just make sure that we wash his hands right afterwards. How about you guys, do you let the germs hinder their activities?  Today at work my GM was shocked that I let DS play on the public play area, I said that he can't live in a bubble.

  • I just make sure that he washes his hands afterwards.  He has also gotten his flu shot.  I figure he is a kid I cant say he cant play because im afraid of germs.

  • Germs are everywhere, and kids get sick.

I have taken Lucy to the playground a million times and shes never gotten sick.  Ever.

I also don't wash her toys or worry about her eating a little dirt when shes playing.  I would rather her grow up knowing how to have fun than constantly chasing after her with GermX....

  • Before flu season, I didn't worry about it. ?I doubt it's any coincidence that he got his worst cold ever after playing in a children's museum, but I figure he's a kid and I can't not let him play.

Now with the flu going crazy before flu season has even started, not to mention the H1N1 risk to me as a pregnant woman, we're avoiding all indoor play areas. ??

  • This whole H1N1 had been on my mind so I wipe the restaurant high chairs and tables with clorox disinfectant wipes but DS hasn't gone to the park in weeks. It's so funny because I was just talking to DH about this last night. DS is still putting his mouth on everything so it concerns me only because it is flu season. Otherwise, I'm pretty laid back about germs.

  • Nope. We go the mall play areas, kiddie bounce-house-type franchises, etc.

Yesterday we were out at a pumpkin patch, where DD played in the dirt, got straw all over herself in the hay maze, and petted farm animals. She had a great time.

I just bring wipes/hand sanitizer to clean her up afterwards.

  • My H is neurotic about it.  He refuses to take her anywhere that is a public play area (mall playground, Magic Mountain etc...) but I have him convinced that since she has gotten her flu shot that we really should be okay.  I hope I don't regret saying that!
  • DD just went to her first indoor play area a couple days ago.  DH and I (DH still is) freaked out about it since there are feet everywhere, and, yep, germs of course.  But I was like, she goes to the playground, touches things everywhere, plays with whomever - right?  We use the Boppy for public highchairs and shopping carts.  I also wipe off restaurant tables w/ anti-bac wipes.  I am a germ-a-phobe about some things, but she'll be fine and has to be a kid.  After she played at the indoor mall area I wiped her hands (and socks!) off with wet-ones anti-bac wipes.

She's UTD on her shots and I am not getting her the flu shot or H1N1.
