thermometer

What kind of thermometer do you have and how do you take the temp? I know rectal is best...however at this age DD is very squirmy and very mobile!

TIA

Re: thermometer

  • We have a Vick's and we take it under the arm and just add a degree.  There's no way we can do it rectally anymore.

  • We have a temporal one which is the kind that you run across the forehead.  It is super fast!
  • We have a Braun ThermoScan (in the ear one) and it only takes 3 seconds to get the temperature! My mom has the one that goes across the forehead at her house for DS.

DD was sick recently (hospitalized for poss H1N1, turned out to be pneumonia). Anyhow, using my temporal artery scanner (and I'm a nurse so I know how to use them), her temp was constantly wrong. Scan forehead, 98.1, axillary temp would be 102.8! WFT??? So, I pitched it and bought a Braun Ear Therm. The hospitalist pedi doc said to ditch the temporal artery scanners... they were once thought to be just as effective as rectal, but they flopped. I learned the hard way. He said the ear one was next best.
