Babies: 3 - 6 Months

XP - What do you do when your baby cries/screams in public?

Usually I just pack DD up and take her home when she starts to get really upset when we're out and about... However, we're visiting Chicago for the week, and I want to take her out today while I go shopping (just using the stroller), while my husband attends his conference. I'm so scared she'll start screaming and crying when we're out (she's a pretty fussy "high maintenance" baby - we had to leave the restaurant last night bc she couldn't settle), and I won't be able to get back quickly to the hotel. At home, nursing her usually eventually calms her down, but due to her reflux and my overactive letdown, nursing in public usually ends badly and I can't count on it to settle her (I usually lie down while nursing at home to slow my flow).

What do you do if your baby freaks out in public? Is there anything I can do to make it less likely that she'll get really upset? Should I chance her getting upset, or just hang out at the hotel today until my husband is available to come out with me and give me a hand?

  • Do you have a wrap you can use?  At that age, I could put DD in a wrap and go shopping for hours.  She would snuggle up and sleep the entire time.  You can bring the stroller and put your diaper bag and shopping bags in it.

  • Smile and get through it. If I took them home every them they both acted up I'd never be able to leave the house.

People are very understanding when it comes to infants/toddlers (IMO)

  • I second the wrap suggestion.  My DS was high maintenance as well when he was a tiny baby.  He's gotten worlds better, but the wrap saved my life when he was younger.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • In  general I found both of my girls did better being "worn" than in the stroller until they were a bit older.  I think they needed to close physical contact.  If you have a wrap or sling I'd recommend wearing her in that and bringing the stroller in case you get tired. GL!

  • I am on my 2nd child, so the crying doesn't phase me now, haha!!  I recently took a flight with only my 4 month old and she cried half the 4 hour flight.  If this would have happened with my 1st child, I would have been freaking out.  Now, I just do the best that I can to try and get her to stop crying.  Most people are understanding.

Like PP mentioned, I would bring a sling along with you with your stroller. If you are out and about with the baby, she should keep sleeping if you are moving about?

Where are you staying when you are in Chicago?  I am just asking because I live in the city (Lincoln Park) and parts of the city tend to be fairly child friendly.  If you are staying down on Michigan Ave I can recommend a few places where you could stop for breastfeeding.

  • I try to soothe him and if it doesn't help I make a run for it =)
  • I agree with the wrap/carrier idea. She may take that better than the stroller. Whats the deal with your let-down? This sounds weird, but could you take a cold pack with you to put on the other side while you nurse her? Cold slows down milk flow.

I find blowing gently in Savannah's face cools her down when she gets worked up. Pacis, crinkle noises (lately her travel wipe bag), nursing, and holding her calms her.
