Natrual birth, intended water birth but had meconium

Keegan was born Wed. Oct.7th, 2009 but I went into labor Sun. Oct. 4th. I started having regular contractions around 7:00 while at the grocery store. We got home and started out for a walk hoping to speed things up; they went to every 3 mins. so we called our midwife, who said to get in the bath tub and relax and see if they continue, they did so we headed to the birth center(a 1 1/2 hour drive for us) we made it there just after midnight and the contractions were staying every 3 mins. I was 1-2CM and about 75%. After giving me Tylenol PM to help me sleep through early labor my midwife left me to sleep, when she came back to check me at 3:00 I got up to pee and had a gush of water leak out as I sat down. She checked it with a ph strip and confirmed my water had broken. To our surprise I was able to go back to sleep and the following day after no progress for 10 hours discovered my water hadn't broken. They can't explain the gush I had or the ph strip turning but they said it was possible I had a small tear that leaked out some fluid.

I continued contracting regularly for the next few days until 3:00AM Wed. morning when I awoke to my water breaking for real and much to my sadness to find it wasn't clear but had a green chunky appearance (I was planning to have a water birth) what I saw was meconium. I called my midwife who said to head in. We arrived at 5:00AM my water had broken more in the car and I would say it was like a gallon of fluid. I was 2-3CM and still 75%. I was SBP so they started my first IV (I ended up having 3 different ones, due to bad placement or rolling veins) and tried to sleep for a bit. My contractions began to intensify into really bad menstrual cramps and pain in my lower back so as soon as I was unhooked from the IV I jumped in the tub which helped so much. I had to get out every 1/2 hour or so cause I kept having to poop which they said was normal. Around 8:00AM they checked me again and I was 6CM and thinned.

At this point my contractions were getting really painful and some would completely catch me off guard coming one right after another had just stopped and send me into a screaming panic. Around 12:30 PM they checked me again and I was 8-9CM with a small lip and they confirmed I wouldn't be able to deliver in the tub, heartbroken I knew it was best for my baby to not have the water birth I was so hoping for. I again got out of the tub to poop and oddly felt a lot of comfort sitting on the toilet, it was comfortable for my hips, I could rock which helped with the pain, and pooping relived a lot of pressure.

I headed for the bed around 1:00PM and shortly after felt intense urges to push so I started pushing on my hands and knees which really felt good but I was so tired I couldn't hold myself up. I flopped to my side and my husband laid behind me holding my right leg and my mom held my left and I grabbed onto my husbands neck and my mom's pocket and pushed for about 30 mins. and she was out. I pooped every time I pushed but I didn't care, they cleaned me every time and it showed I was pushing right. The midwife was shocked I didn't tare, the perineal massaging paid off! Keegan was born at 1:41 PM and we were both healthy and headed home by 7:00PM.
