3rd Trimester

Is my Mum being overly cautious?

We have a double bed that we are swapping with my parents for one of their single beds.

So we're doing the swap tomorrow. Me and DH will hire a trailer and take our bed to Mum and Dads.

So Mum rings and says they'll come round in the morning to help us to load the trailer. They live 30minutes away.

I think I can manage lifting the bed. It's just a basic mattress and base, nothing especially heavy. Mum says that I'm foolish and it's not worth taking the risk.

So am I being foolish, or is my Mum overly cautious?  I think it's really sweet of them to drive out, but I think it's a waste of their time also.

Re: Is my Mum being overly cautious?

  • If its you AND dh lifting the bed, then yeah you guys should be able to handle it.

If its just you! I would let them help!

  • My Dh wont let me lift anything over 10 lbs! I would not if I were you.
  • I figure, in terms of lifting and being pregnant, it is better to be safe than sorry, especially if someone is kind and thoughtful enough to offer to help.

  • Yeah it would be definitely me and Dh doing it. It would be too awkward for anyone to do on their own.

I guess just seeing as my parents are 70 (a healthy 70, but 70 none the less) it seems really wrong to have them do the lifting when I'm just pregnant, not broken.

  • I know how it feels to feel like your pregnant not broken....but just let them help! a bed is heavy and awkward.
  • Yeah, there could be risk, so why even try? Cherish this time...this will likely be the only time you are forced to not lift a finger!!
  • Honestly, if it were me, I'd be lifting it too, as long as I felt I could and I had someone else helping me.  I figure I've been lifting my 45 pound son throughout this pregnancy with no problems.  But just be sure to "listen" to your body and if it feels like too much, then stop.
  • I think it just depends on how much you are used to lifting when you haven`t been pregnant.  If its not a lot than I wouldn`t try but it its about the same I wouldn`t worry about it.

This coming from someone who put together a queen size bed, baby crib, and kitchen table together on her own during her second trimester.

  • I'm an absolute pack-horse most of the time.

I'd think nothing of carrying a 50 pound bag of concrete or compost by myself.

I wouldn't do that pregnant. I have just been listening to my body and taking any heavy lifting gently, taking the weight in my legs and if it feels too much then I just put it down and let someone else do it.

Like I said, I'm grateful to my Mum for offering it just feels wrong to let the old folk lift stuff.
