2nd Trimester

just put my cat to sleep...

I can't stop crying.  :(  I got him when I was pregnant with my daughter...I was on bedrest for 10 weeks and was super lonely.  He kept me company and got me through my pregnancy, which was full of complications and very difficult.  He was my best friend.  And admittedly, after I gave birth, I didn't give him the attention he deserved and I am feeling horrible about it right now.

About a month ago he got really sick and had a blockage in his bladder, which is fairly common for male cats.  He required surgery and we spent about 1k, which we didn't really have bc of medical complications/expenses with my current pregnancy.  But we did it and he seemed much better, but knew he would likely have further problems, as it usually is recurring.  Well, I came home today to find him howling like crazy and sitting in a pool of unknown liquid.  My DH rushed him to the vet and they did blood work and x-rays, which determined his bladder ruptured.  Apparently he was in critical condition and wouldn't survive the night, we had to make a sudden decision.

They quoted us 3k for surgery and then said they couldn't promise he would survive the surgery due to his critical condition and also that he wouldn't have the same thing happen again in a month.  This was 2x in just under a month that he was going to have surgery again.  I couldn't imagine spending 3k right now and have him die anyway or be in any more pain once again.  He was only 3 years old and should have been healthy and happy.

I had to decide and obviously I made my decision....it was so hard.  He was my daughter's BFF and she is going to be devastated when she finally understands he is never coming home.  I am so sad and can't help but feel I might have made the wrong decision.  I know he would have died tonight w/o the surgery and he might have died even with the surgery....but I feel so awful.  I can't eat or do anything...

  • I am so sorry.  I had to put my childhood cat to sleep due to kidney problems when I was 16.  It was one of the hardest things to do, but it was the right decision.  We spent in the thousands trying to prolong his life, but within the month, he went into complete kidney failure.

  • Im so sorry for you sweetie! I went through this in august and it is really tough, but it does get better! He is at peace now and will be waiting at the Rainbow bridge for you! They truly are part of us and our family. Take a deep breath try to calm down and think of happy thoughts for the sake of the baby!
  • Awww......just reading this makes me cry.  I feel your pain and am soo sorry for your loss.  We had to put our cat down this past August.  He was only 4 years old.  He had severe liver failure and was very skinny and jaundiced and wouldn't or drink very much.  It was sooo hard to do and I still get sad about it pretty often.  He was DS' best friend and they played together everyday.  After he was gone a few days later DS woke up in the middle of the night, came into our room and was crying.  He said "My kitty is gone, he's not here."  He just kept crying and repeating it.  He settled down after a few minutes and went back to sleep.  It was so heartbreaking.  Since then he has mentioned the cat once or twice.  When he did mention him I asked him where the cat was and he said "He's at work."  He is 2 and I just left it at that.  He is used to DH being gone and at work so I guess that he thought the same.

It will get better but will take time.  Hopefully your DD will be ok too.

  • I had three cats die in the past few years (all had lived nearly 20yrs) and I know how horrible it is when they're suffering at the end. I'm so sorry you lost your cat, but you absolutely did right by him. Your choice was the most loving thing you could do for him. t&p
  • Thank you everyone...I am so sad right now and I can't help but feel I just killed my cat when he might have had a chance to live?!  How can I ever feel like i made the right decision?

I have had to put a few family pets to sleep in my lifetime, but it was ultimately my parents decision, not mine...so that made it easier.  Being an adult sucks sometimes.  :(

  • My heart just breaks for you and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • awe breezie, you have to know you made the best decision at the time with the info you had. You did make the right one. Your kitty is no longer in pain and resting peacefully.
  • So sorry to hear about your kitty.  You definitely did the right thing..even with the surgery it sounds like he/she still would have been in pain.  I agree though, my parents have been the ones to handle that type of situation and I dread that day that its my turn.  It will make you a stronger person for your children.
