My LO had a "spell"

I think this is one of those words that many of you do not like to hear.  I heard it for the first time today and I don't want to hear it again.  DS was doing so good with feeding from the bottle, but since they increased his feeding he is having reflux issues.  Anyone familiar with the term "brady"?  Thats waht the nurse called it when his heart rate dropped during feeding.  Today DS had a throat study to see how bad the reflux is.  The doc is still waiting to read the report.  He said since DS had a "spell" they were going to hold off on disharge .... uuurrrg .... today was supposed to be the day.  Oh well,  I guess it is better to keep him longer and know he is okay rather than take him home too early and have to go back.  It is just a little frustrating.

Re: My LO had a "spell"

  • Ah yes, bradies. We know them well. Both Charlie and Lily had them with feedings in the beginning, and Lily still has them occassionally after feedings due to reflux. In fact, they kept her in the NICU four days longer than Charlie. She was eventually just sent home even though she still had bradies. Hang in there - it's usually something they outgrow fairly quickly.

  • Yep - Brady's are common in the preemie kids but hopefully your LO will do better when/if his reflux is treated so he can come home!!!
  • Yep, very familiar with the term. That is the reason Dylan was is the NICU for so long. He probably could have come home 2 weeks earlier if it weren't for them. They will go away on average around 36 weeks gestation. They are horrible to witness as well. Dylan had to be 5 days A&B free before he could come home. He was on caffine for his A&B's and is still on it 2 months after being released although we only have 4 days left of it.

  • yes D had one in the NICU too, we also were close to discharge date and I think it pushed it out 3 days. The last thing they learn to do before being born (so we were told by nurses) is suck, swallow, breath. While feeding or if there is a reflux issue that is commen... hopefully that is his only one and he is discharged soon.

    your son is beautiful!

  • Very common in the preemie realm.  Both Nathan and Joey were on caffeine for bradys for weeks.  They had to be brady free for 5-7 days before coming home.  Joey ended up there a week longer than Nathan because he had one the day we were taking him home (after not for 5 days).  It was so hard to leave him longer, but also we didn't want to take him home and then have more issues at home.  They tend to get better and go away as they approach their due date.  I hope that's soon for you!
