newborn spitting up while sleeping?

So how am I supposed to get any sleep when LO is spitting up milk while sleeping. I put on a bib at night, but he still manages to get his outfits wet and either wakes up, or stays awake and never goes to sleep. I have him sleeping in the boppy vibrating chair in the crib but still spits up. I dont' want to just let him make a mess of himself and leave him for the morning, I just can't bring myself to do that. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

Also, when LO is awake in the chair, he's making all kinds of noises and gurgles that I can't sleep even if I wanted to. Obviously when he's fussy I won't sleep, but if he's contently sucking on his soothie and just making noises, I still can't sleep. I just sit at the edge of my bed and stare into the crib at him until I pass out. Not healthy! Or is it normal for a new first time mom?! lol

Re: newborn spitting up while sleeping?

  • I would suggest not putting him to bed with a bib on. He could choke.

My LO spits up alot during the day, but I don't have any experience with spitting up in her sleep. I would ask your pediatrician about it!

  • I wouldnt put a bib on him, my pedi advised us to roll up a recieving blanket and put it behind him so he could sleep on his side. If he spits up I wake up and dab it up but it doesnt usually get all over him. I just rub his back/pat his bum and he falls back asleep. If he gets some on his onesie I definetly leave it- my LO doesnt seem to care and I think its much more important for him and I to get sleep than to worry about a bit of spit up. Plus it would happen so much throughout the day you will have laundry coming out your ears! The issue about not being able to sleep because of thier noises is horrible. I am still trying to deal with it but its better because I realized if I do fall asleep I WILL wake up to his fussiness if he needs me and Ive gotten to know his sounds. My LO gasps and gurgles and coughs in his sleep and its terrifying but you just have to listen, watch and learn what thier noises are and try to relax. Its hard and might take sometime but it will get better. Good luck!

  • First, never put a bib on him while hes sleeping. Do you have the vibrating on? That might help him to not spit up if its NOT on, we figured that out the hard way with DD.
  • No advice on the spitup, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who uses the vibrating chair for night sleeping.  It's the only thing that will keep her asleep.

  • We use a sloped baby positioner to elevate his head slightly and that stopped most of the nighttime spitting up. I agree with the other poster who said you get used to the sounds and figure out what is normal for your baby.

  • Do you breatfeed or use formula? We use formula and had a lot of problems with him spitting up at night. He would spit up two or three times after every feeding! We had been using Enfamil Premium and were recommended to change to Enfamil Gentlease. It has helped incredibly! He's spit up MAYBE 5 times since we started using it three days ago, and only one of those times was when he was laying down to sleep. Hope this helps!

This.  I have the same problem with DD.  I spoke to my lactation consultant and she suggested to elevate baby a little.  You can use a sloped positioner, or she suggested just take a towel, rolling it up and putting it under the crib mattress to elevate it slightly.  She also suggested holding DD upright for 15-20 minutes after eating before laying her down again.  Another girl in my mom's group said that this worked for her DS.  GL!
